Enabling your Huawei modem/router to work with Optus
In this article, we'll help you set up your Huawei modem to help you get connected to our network as smoothly as possible.
We support a range of modems, but as every device is a little different, it's important to check if your modem is compatible. If you run into any issues, we'll do our best to get your nbn® modem working, though support for non-Optus modems is limited.
Huawei HG658
- Reset your modem/router to default settings:
- Press and hold the Reset button for at least 6 seconds
- In your internet browser, type http://192.168.1.1 into the browsers address bar and press enter
- Login with these details:
- Username: admin
- Password: admin
- Select 'Basic' and then 'WAN'
- Remove the existing 'IP_Routed (PPP)' connection by ticking 'Remove' and then selecting 'Submit'
- Add a new connection with these details:
- Wan connection: Enable
- Connection type: IP_Routed (IP)
- Leave all other fields as default
6. Select 'Basic', then 'Link interface' and then 'ATM' 7. Remove any ATM links present 8. Select 'PTM' and then 'New' with the following details:

- PTM priority: Normal priority
- VLAN: Unchecked
- Leave other items as default
9. Select 'Submit' 10. Restart modem/router, if necessary
Huawei HG659
- In your internet browser, type http://192.168.1.1 into the browsers address bar and pressenter
- Login with these details:
- Username: root
- Password: uh!7+a3ng
- These details will be different to the admin settings on your modem/router
- Navigate to 'Device management' and then 'Back up or restore settings'
- Create a back up of your settings
- Navigate to 'Internet' and delete all items
- Select 'New WAN connection' and input the following details:
- Name: Optus
- Check service type: Internet
- Access type: PTM Uplink
- Connection type: IP routing (IP)
- MRU 1500
- MSS: 0
- NAT type: NAPT
- Enable VLAN: uncheck
- IP protocol version: IPv4 and IPv6
- Uncheck static DNS.
- DHCP
- Restart modem/router, if necessary
Remove remote access to modem/router
These steps disable your previous telco from being able to access your modem/router
- Navigate to 'Maintain' and then 'Remote Management'
- Uncheck 'Enable remote management' and select Save
Huawei DN8245V
- In your internet browser, type http://192.168.1.1 into the browsers address bar and press enter
- Login with these details:
- Username: admin or !!Huawei
- Password: admin or @HuaweiHgwm
- Select 'Advance Configuration' and then 'WAN configuration'
- Select all connections and click 'Delete'
- Select 'New' and input the following details:
- Service type: INTERNET
- Access type:
- FTTC/HFC/FTTP: GE
- FTTN/FTTB: PTM
- Encapsulation mode: IPoE
- VLAN: Unticked
- MTU: leave empty (it should default to 1500)
- IP acquisition mode: DHCP
- Select 'Apply'
- Restart modem, if necessary
