What is trade up?

Important: New phone trade up is no longer available to new and recontracting customers.

If you signed up to an Optus Choice, Optus One or Optus Family plan prior to the 3/5/21, you'll still be able to trade up to a new phone on a 12, 24 or 36 month device payment plan (Optus Pay).

The new plans will not include the option to trade up.

Does your Postpaid mobile phone plan include the option to trade up?

In this article we'll explain what trade up means and how to get your hands on a new device.

Please note : Customers who have signed up to the OptusOne Plan promotion offer between 11/06/21 -30/06/21 will still be eligible for new phone trade up.

Some of our Postpaid mobile phone plans come with a new phone trade up option.

This means you can pay a one-off fee to return your current mobile phone and grab yourself a new one, before your contract has ended.

Check your plan's Critical Information Summary (CIS) to determine whether trade up is available on your plan.

If you're eligible for trade up, you can trade up your device at any Optus store.

Note: You must return your mobile phone in 'good working order', otherwise you'll be charged a fee.

What if my contract has ended?

If your contract has already ended, you can sign up for a new plan and device online or in-store and you do not need to return your current device.

What if I'm not eligible for trade up?

If you're not eligible for a trade up, you can still upgrade online or in-store, but there may be charges associated with cancelling your contract early, including any monthly device credits or discounts that Optus was going to cover (if applicable).

See your plan's Critical Information Summary.

I want a new mobile, but I want to keep my old one too

You can keep your current mobile by paying out the remaining cost, including any monthly credits that Optus was going to cover (if applicable).

Head in-store or to the Optus website to purchase a new plan and device.

Your device must be in 'Good Working Order'. This means the phone is fully functional and isn't physically damaged beyond normal wear and tear, as reasonably determined by us. Otherwise, you'll be charged a fee.

Also note:

    • We can't process a device return if the device is locked. Remove locks from your phone includes screen locks and PIN codes
    • You must also wipe the device clean of all personal and confidential information before returning it

For more on these points, see What does 'Good Working Order' mean?

If you're looking to bring your number across to Optus, see Switch your mobile service to Optus for more info.
