Speed and drop-outs: Home Internet troubleshooting

If you're without access to the Internet, experiencing drop-outs or slower than expected speeds, there are several checks you can perform from home.

In this article, we'll walk you through all the ways to troubleshoot your Internet connection drop-outs or slow speeds based on the issue that you're experiencing.

Test your Optus Internet speed

Test your Internet speed by running a speed test in My Optus app. My Optus app collects information such as speed and latency which you can use to optimise your home network.

Check the status of the Network

Head to our Network Status page. Make sure to flag the Fixed Outages check box. Enter your post code to see if there's any planned or unplanned outage in your area. If we've reported an unplanned outage, we'll give you the option to report your fault.

  1. Disconnect the power supply from your modem.
    • Wait 60 seconds and plug the power cord back into your modem
  2. Ensure the WAN, Internet, or @ light is on, and green

    • Check out our Device Guides for instructions specific to your modem
Is there anything else I can try?
  1. If you suspect that there's an issue with your WiFi connection, connect using a LAN / Ethernet cable. This will rule out any potential Optus network issues
  2. Factory reset your modem
    • You'll need a small PIN to press down on the button
  3. If you're still unable to connect to the Internet, message one of our Experts via My Optus app.

    1. Make sure your browser and operating system are up-to-date
    2. Check if your device storage is approaching full capacity, which may affect its processing speed
    3. Isolate all other pieces of equipment where possible and disconnect everything from your WiFi Network other than the device you'll use for testing purposes
    4. Perform a speed test
      1. If possible, run two sets of speed tests
      2. We'll need a speed test performed over WiFi and one via an Ethernet connection
      3. If you decide to contact us, we may ask you for these results
      4. If you have security software installed. You may wish to temporarily disable your anti-virus software and run an additional speed test
      5. If there's an issue, consult the software manufacturers to discuss a workaround
    5. If there's a noticeable difference between your WiFi and Ethernet speed, you can try switching between the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi bands
      Note:
you will need a dual-band modem
    6. Try re-positioning your modem
      • If possible, the higher the better and away from obstructions. Dense materials such as concrete or solid brick walls may interfere with your WiFi signal
