Chaz Mostert claims his first win in the Mobil 1 Optus Racing Toyota Supra at Tasmania Super440

Chaz has done it. The Supercars champion has driven his Mobil 1 Optus Racing Toyota GR Supra to the checkered flag from pole position during Race 14 of the Tasmania Super440 at Symmons Plains Raceway. We couldn’t be prouder to see our favourite Supercars driver charge the Optus name over the finish line first.

Following exceptional qualifying results in the lead-up to the race, Chaz enjoyed clean air at the front of the pack while the battle for P2 got heated behind him.

An epic pitstop performance by his pit crew saw Chaz rejoin the race without having to take back the lead, putting the first race of the weekend in the bag for the Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver.

“It was awesome to get my first win with Toyota today alongside my fellow old mate, Dave, that must have been Supercar’s oldest podium this year, I’m proud to be a part of that statistic,” Chaz Mostert said.

“In all seriousness, the team have done an awesome job developing the Toyota Supra’s, there is still plenty to learn but the strides they have taken forward to this point is nothing short of impressive.”

Race 15 also took place on the Saturday, where Chaz achieved P20. Halfway through the race, he made contact with Jayden Ojeda, with Chaz called into the pits to serve a 15-second penalty.

While being one of the fastest cars on the field, the setback put the Mobil 1 Optus Racing Toyota GR Supra at the rear-end of the grid.

“We started further back in the second race today than we would have liked and not the results we would have liked either,” Chaz added.

Sunday came with Race 16, with Chaz improving on his Race 15 results by finishing in P9 – right behind his teammate Ryan Wood in P8.

Being a longer race than the ones that took place on Saturday, Race 16 involved three compulsory pitstops, meaning a different strategy would need to be deployed.

There’d be less passing opportunities across the 200km race, and in the opening laps, Chaz made significant progress, taking four positions. By lap 30, he had taken seven.

“The weekend started in unbelievable fashion with a race win in the Mobil 1 Optus Toyota Supra rocket, which was really cool,” Chaz said.

“Our weekend went a bit up and down after the win, starting 18th was going to be a tough ask today but an 84 lap race helped us make our way up to 9th.

“Overall, really happy with the weekend to get my first win and pole for Toyota it was amazing to do it in front of all the fans here in Tasmania.”

Next up is the Indigenous round in Darwin, the Darwin Triple Crown, taking place over June 19 – 21 at Hidden Valley Raceway.
