The Gentlemen S2 (Netflix MA15+) September 03

The Gentlemen are back in business (and albeit, have never looked better).

If you’re unfamiliar with The Gentlemen series, I would recommend catching up on the first season – not only will it bring context to the upcoming storyline, but also truth be told - it simply is a great watch.

Based on the 2019 film of the same title and from the very British mind of Guy Ritchie, The Gentlemen picks up a year after the events of season one. After becoming the reluctant heir to his family estate and inheriting his father’s role as an underworld kingpin, Eddie Horniman (played by Theo James) soon realises that being a gangster suits him just as well as a tailored suit from Savile Row.

After joining forces with Susie Glass (played by Kaya Scodelario), the two set their sights on climbing the criminal food chain hoping to become the underground king and queen and take their operations overseas. With season two, we not only get the classic ‘will they, won’t they’ trope between these two alphas but at the same time – The Gentleman also gives us the tense “will they live, will they die or will they kill’ story you can expect from any good gangster movie.

So pour yourself a glass, invest in some good shades, try not imitating a cockney accent in public and enjoy season 2.

The Love Hypothesis (Prime Video R18+) September 23

Anyone in the BookTok community knew it was only a matter of time that The Love Hypothesis, one of the most trending adult contemporary romance books would eventually receive the movie adaption treatment – however something the community was not prepared for was the perfect casting of Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart (another contemporary romance favourite) as Olive Smith.

It gets better.

The Love Hypothesis originally began as a fanfic story based on the Star Wars characters Rey and Kylo Ren - but the characters and plot were eventually reworked for book publishing. In the Star Wars universe Rey is played Daisy Ridley who in real life is married to Tom Bateman – and as purposeful coincidence goes, he will be playing the male lead in this film adaptation.

So you can only imagine how excited the internet and fandom became when this project was announced. For those less online, The Love Hypothesis follows Olive Smith, a biology PhD student who fakes a relationship with young professor Dr. Adam Carlsen to prove to her best friend that she has moved on - but of course, problem arises when the naïve duo become confused as to whether their fake relationship is indeed fake or turning into real emotions.

If hype is anything to go by – we’re definitely adding The Love Hypothesis early to our rom com must watches.

The Runner (Prime Video PG 13+) September 02

How far would you go to save your loved ones?

After watching The Runner, I came to realise that my current answer is unfortunately probably not that far - or more so I wouldn’t be healthy enough to go the distance, especially compared to Gal Gadot’s efforts in this movie.

In this psychological thriller Gadot plays Maia, a high-powered lawyer in London who not only is at the top of her career but also likes to think she is one step ahead of everyone around her – until one day she seemingly crosses the wrong person.

After dropping off her son at school, Maia goes for her routine morning run where she receives a phone call that absolutely shatters her perfect world. The caller? Her son’s kidnapper.

In order to save her son, Maia must obey mysterious instructions and complete tasks all over London to not only keep her son alive but also figure out who this absurd caller is. She must keep moving, follow everything she’s been told to do and tell no one. If she stops, her son may die.

The Runner is a high-stakes cat and mouse chase where every moment counts, and every decision has a consequence. Think Taken meets Eagle Eye and sprinkle in a little Sarah Connor and you’ve got The Runner.

Although this movie is highly unlikely to happen in real life, I found myself thoroughly enjoying it and later dusting off my running shoes – just in case. Head over to Prime Video to see if you would keep up.

NFL Melbourne, LIVE September 11

American Football has come to Australia.

For many of us, Football is Aussies Rules and our reference for American Football is mostly seen through movies and Superbowl performances – but over the years, we’ve come to appreciate the athleticism of this contact sport and as Aussie culture goes – as long as it’s a sport with a loud chant, we’re on board.

This year, the city of Melbourne will host Australia’s first-ever regular season NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with the live broadcast happening on Netflix on September 11 at 10.30AM AEST.

If sports isn’t really your thing – and you’re one of those people that has to sit with their partner or friend through these sorts of games, you would be happy to know that the Jonas Brothers will also make an appearance as the half time show performers.
