What’s the difference between Mobile Broadband & 4G Home Internet?

Before getting connected, it's important to find out what product best suits your needs.

In this article, we'll explain the key differences between Mobile Broadband and 4G Home Internet (previously known as 'Wireless Broadband').

Mobile Broadband gives you quick access to the web no matter where you are. Whether you're using it with a tablet or WiFi modem, you'll also be to use the internet on the go. Mobile Broadband uses the same technology as your mobile phone to connect to the network.

It's available with Prepaid, month-to-month or on contract. Check out all of our options here.

4G Home Internet (previously known as 'Wireless Broadband') is your wireless alternative to ADSL, Cable or nbnTM internet . Using our Mobile Network, 4G Home Internet connects your home or office to the internet without the need for a phone line or technician.

It's available on a month to month or 24-month contract. Check out all our options here.

Can I use my own modem?

When you sign up for 4G Home Internet you'll receive an Optus-supplied modem.

Note: When purchasing month-to-month, you'll need to pay an upfront cost for the modem. 4G Home Internet does not support medical devices or back-to-base alarms and may not achieve the same speeds as a fixed line connection.

The main difference between the two products is the location they're intended to be used in. Typically, Mobile Broadband is for customers who want internet on the go, whereas 4G Home Internet is intended for use at home or in the office.

Is there a difference in speed?

Both services operate over the Optus 4G Network. Speeds can vary across the Optus 4G Mobile Network and will depend on several factors such as congestion, location, local conditions, hardware, software and general internet traffic.
