Setting up the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Home Internet modem

From 28 February 2024, our 5G Home Internet plans will be supplied with the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Home Internet modem.

This article has the info you need to install the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Home Internet modem and connect your devices.

  • If you received your modem before this date, see Setting up the Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 3 modem
  • If you received your modem before 11 October 2021, refer to the Quick Start Guide

You'll connect the supplied modem to the Optus 5G Network by inserting your Optus Nano SIM into the modem.

Connecting successfully will allow you to access:

  • Comprehensive Optus technical support
  • Selected Living Network features
  • The Optus Speed Satisfaction Guarantee

For step-by-step setup instructions and tips for optimising your home network, download My Optus app.

In the app, you'll find:

  • 5G Setup guide showing your closest 5G Tower
  • Test your Internet speed and health
  • Message for help 24/7

Alternatively, refer to the Quick Start Guide.

In the box you'll receive:

  • 1 x Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Home Internet modem
  • 1 x Power supply
  • 1 x AC cable
  • 1 x White Ethernet cable
  • 1 x Quick Start Guide
  • 1 x Optus data SIM (Nano SIM can be pushed out)
  • 1 x SIM removal tool
  • 1 x WiFi fridge magnet
  • 1 x safety instructions
  • 1 x manufacturer warranty card

A Nano SIM card and a SIM removal tool will be provided with your modem, which is automatically activated.

If you're an existing 5G Home Internet customer, please responsibly dispose of the SIM in your existing modem as it can't be used in your new Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Home Internet modem.

  1. Simply push out the smallest size SIM (white) from the large SIM card holder and recycle the remaining packaging
  2. Turn the modem to view the SIM slot and place in a stable position
  3. Eject the SIM tray using the removal tool
  4. Orient the Nano SIM so the angled corner of the SIM matches the angled corner of the SIM tray and place the SIM in the SIM tray
  5. Slide the SIM tray back into the modem

Tip. Take a photo of the bottom of your modem sticker with your smartphone, so you can refer to the WiFi login details later.

  1. If possible, place the modem as close to a window as possible. You'll need to make sure there's a power outlet close by the window
  2. Plug one end of the AC power cord into the back of the modem. Plug the other end of the power cord into the power supply
  3. Power on the modem using the on / off button on the back of the device
  4. Wait 30 seconds for the modem to complete powering up. You'll see the modem screen turn on

Download My Optus app on your smartphone and follow the '5G Setup' option to find your closest Optus 5G tower:

  1. Place the modem close to a window and free from major obstructions
  2. Connect the power cable to the socket on back of the modem, ensuring the power button is pushed on and insert the adapter plug to a wall electrical point
  3. The modem will turn on and the modem screen will display a 'booting' message
  4. It will then search for the closest Optus 5G tower and will configure its internal antenna to optimise signal strength. This process can take several minutes to complete
  5. The modem screen should now show 'Your connection is …' depending on the strength of your signal, with coverage bars indicating the signal strength

Once you're connected, the modem may automatically update the firmware within the first 24 hours. This often occurs overnight to avoid impacting your internet connection.

The modem has a built-in colour LCD screen with 3 x navigational buttons which allows quick and easy access to your 5G connection:

  1. Mobile signal strength screen
  2. Main WiFi Details page
  3. WiFi on / off toggle
  4. WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) pairing page for WPS compatible devices
  5. Modem screen brightness (numbers)
  6. WiFi Settings summary page - informative
  7. Mobile settings summary - informative across 2 x screens
  8. Help and support

  1. If the screen displays a poor 5G Signal, shown by the coverage bars, or only displays 4G Signal, try repositioning the modem to a new location in your home
  2. Use the 5G Setup section of My Optus app to find your closest Optus 5G tower
  3. Small repositioning movements and rotating the modem slightly can help optimise your signal strength

If you can't receive a 4G or 5G signal your modem will display empty bars and No Signal. You'll need to contact us for further assistance.

Connecting to WiFi
  1. Your WiFi name (SSID) and password (WiFi key) can be found on the bottom of the modem or on the WiFi fridge magnet
  2. Find the correct WiFi network from your device's list of available WiFi networks and enter your password to connect
  3. To optimise your WiFi experience:
    - Place the modem at least one metre off the floor and in a central part of your home or office
    - Make sure there is space and ventilation around the modem
    - Avoid placing the modem near large appliances and any Bluetooth devices

Connecting using ethernet cable
  1. Connect your devices directly to the modem using the supplied ethernet cable
  2. Plug the ethernet cable into one of the ports labelled LAN on your modem
  3. Plug the other end into your device

Using My Optus app

  1. Open My Optus app from your connected smart device connected to the modem
  2. From the For You page, select Network
  3. Select Connection stats to see more information about your Network Pulse, including speed and suitability for various internet related tasks
