Setting up your Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 3 Home Internet modem

This article has the info you need to install the Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 3 5G modem and connect your devices.

  • If you received your modem after 28 February 2024, see Setting up the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Home Internet modem
  • If you received your modem before 11 October 2021, refer to the Quick Start Guide

You will connect the supplied modem to the Optus 5G Network by inserting your Optus nano SIM into the modem.

Connecting successfully will allow you to access:

  • Comprehensive Optus technical support
  • Selected Living Network features
  • Optus Speed Satisfaction Guarantee

Download My Optus app for step-by-step setup instructions and tips for optimising your home network.

In the app, you'll find:

  • 5G Setup guide showing your closest 5G Tower
  • Test your Internet speed and health
  • Message for help 24/7

In the box you'll receive:

  • 1 x Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 3 (i.e. modem)
  • 1 x Power supply
  • 1 x AC cable
  • 1 x Yellow ethernet cable
  • 1 x Quick Start Guide
  • 1 x Optus SIM (white nano SIM can be pushed out) – new customers only

If this is your first 5G Home Internet service with us, a SIM card will be provided with your modem, which is automatically activated.

If you're an existing 5G Home Internet customer, you can use the SIM card inserted in your current 5G modem.

A nano-size SIM card is used for this device. If receiving a new SIM, simply push out the smallest size SIM (white) from the large SIM card holder and recycle the remaining packaging.

  1. Turn the modem upside down in a stable position
  2. Remove the SIM tray using the finger groove
  3. Orient the nano SIM so the angled corner of the SIM matches the angled corner of the SIM tray and place the SIM in the SIM tray
  4. Slide the SIM tray back into the modem

Tip: Take a photo of the bottom of your modem sticker with your smartphone, so you can refer to the WiFi login details later.

  1. If possible, place the modem as close to a window as possible. You'll need to make sure there's a power outlet close by the window
  2. Plug one end of the AC power cord into the back of the modem. Plug the other end of the power cord into the power supply
  3. Power on the modem using the on/off button underneath the device. You'll see the LCD screen turn on

Download My Optus app on your smartphone and follow the ‘5G Setup’ option to find your closest Optus 5G tower.

  1. Place the modem close to a window and free from major obstructions
  2. Connect the power cable to the socket on back of the modem, ensuring the power button is pushed on and insert the adapter plug to a wall electrical point
  3. The modem will turn on and the LCD touchscreen on top will display a 'booting' message
  4. It will then search for the closest Optus 5G tower and will configure its internal antenna to optimise signal strength. This process can take several minutes to complete
  5. The LCD touchscreen should now show "5G Signal", coverage bars indicating the signal strength and 2x dots showing the internal antenna in use

Once you are connected, the modem will automatically update the firmware within the first 24 hours. This often occurs overnight to avoid impacting your internet connection.

The modem has a built-in touch LCD screen which allows quick and easy access to your 5G connection:

  1. 5G connection strength
  2. WiFi details
  3. WPS pairing
  4. Speed test

  1. Touch the coverage bars on the LCD touchscreen to cycle between the 5G and 4G coverage bar displays
  2. If the screen displays a low 5G Signal, shown by the coverage bars, or only displays 4G Signal, try repositioning the modem to a new location in your home
  3. Use the 5G Setup section of the My Optus app to find your closest Optus 5G tower
  4. Small repositioning movements and rotating the modem slightly can help optimise your signal strength

If you can't receive a 4G or 5G signal your modem will display an X No Signal and you'll need to contact us for further assistance.

Connecting to WiFi

  1. Your WiFi name (SSID) and password (WiFi key) can be found on the bottom of the modem
  2. Find the correct WiFi network from your device's list of available WiFi networks and enter your password to connect

      a. Place the modem at least one metre off the floor and in a central part of your home
      b. Make sure there is space and ventilation around the modem
      c. Avoid placing the modem near large appliances and any Bluetooth devices

    Connecting using ethernet cable

    1. Connect your devices directly to the modem using the supplied ethernet cable
    2. Plug the ethernet cable into one of the ports labelled LAN on your modem
    3. Plug the other end into your device

    Using My Optus app

    1. Open My Optus app from your connected smart device connected to the modem
