How to add or remove nbn® Speed Packs

You can add a Speed Pack to your Optus nbn service.

In this article we'll explain why you might want to add a Speed Pack and the different packs available.

Depending on how you use the internet, your budget, and the number of devices you have connected at once, you may wish to add or change your Speed Pack to get faster internet speeds, or downgrade your Speed Pack to suit your circumstances.

For more information about Optus nbn Speed Packs, click here.

Subject to availability, you can add a Speed Pack to your nbn service once per billing month in the My Optus app, or by contacting us. Speed Packs can only be removed by contacting us.

  1. Log in to My Optus app
  2. Ensure your internet service is selected (tap the device icon in the top left hand corner to toggle between services)
  3. Select Upgrade speed
  4. Select Speed pack
  5. Select Continue
  6. Review and Confirm

The change will take up to 24 hours to take effect, and you will experience a brief service disruption while the changes are being applied. You'll be sent a notification once it's activated.

) plans

  • 6-9 days left: Pay 25% of the Speed Pack charge for the current invoice period
  • 10 - 20 days left: Pay 50% of Speed Pack charge for the current invoice period
  • 21 - 25 days left: Pay 75% of the Speed Pack charge for the current invoice period
  • 26+ days left: Pay 95% of the Speed Pack charge for the current invoice period

The full Speed Pack price will be charged when your next automatic payment is due.

You can experience slower home internet speeds due to a number of factors including:

  • Local conditions such as congestion, signal, proximity and line of sight
  • Your hardware and software
  • Your in-home set up, i.e. modem placement, obstructions
  • How you use the internet at home
  • The data source or destination
  • Your location and weather conditions such as extreme heat and heavy rain

For more information on factors affecting nbn speeds, click here.

Some Speed Packs are available to selected customers and/or as part of selected plans only.

For full details on the nbn Speed Packs available see nbn Speed Packs. Not all nbn customers are eligible for Speed Pack upgrades.

nbn Speed Pack FAQs

A Speed Pack is normally activated on your service within 24 hours of purchase.

No, Speed Packs are provided on a month to month term. You can cancel or reinstate a Speed Pack at any time, once per month.

If you have an Optus-supported modem, you can test your internet speed by running a speed test in the My Optus app. The My Optus app checks information such as speed and latency, which you can use to optimise your home network.

You can also test your speed by using a third-party service.

If you're having issues with your internet speed, please read Optus nbn and internet speed/dropout troubleshooting.

You need a compatible modem to use this service. Depending on the nbn plan you select, it's important to note that when ordering certain speed packs, some modems won't have the capability to fully support those speeds, which may impact your experience.

Older Optus modems don't support Superfast and Ultrafast speeds, and if you're using a BYO modem you can check the supported speeds with the manufacturer and you will be required to acknowledge that your BYO modem may not be capable of delivering higher speeds.

You can find modem information, setup and user guide information here.
