5G Mobile FAQs

Is 5G mobile coverage available in my area?
The Optus 5G mobile network is currently available within selected Australian suburbs. Check out the Optus 5G mobile coverage map for the latest updates on our 5G network rollout.
What happens when I’m outside a 5G coverage area?
Outside of 5G coverage areas, 5G capable devices will switch to the Optus 4G or 3G network.
Why can’t I connect my mobile to 5G?

There could be several reasons why your mobile isn’t connecting to the 5G network. Try the following troubleshooting steps:

1.       Are you able to access the Optus network?

Check whether you're able to connect to the Optus network.

You can see which network you're connected to in the top left corner of your mobile phone's home screen.

If you cannot see 5G, 4G or 3G, there may be an issue preventing you from connecting to the Optus network. See our mobile phone internet troubleshooting article for more help.

If you're able to connect to 3G or 4G, but cannot connect to 5G, move on to step 2.

2.       Are you using a 5G capable device?

Not all mobile phones are compatible with the 5G network. See the above FAQ for a list of 5G capable devices.

3.       Check 5G coverage is available in your area

The Optus 5G mobile network is currently only available within selected Australian suburbs

4.       Turn your mobile data off and on again

No, your service should already be active and your 5G SIM card will already been inserted into your modem.

All you need to do is set up your modem.

If you have a Nokia FastMile 5G Gateway 3 Home Internet modem, find the set up instructions here.

My 5G signal is dropping out, what do I do?

You should first check for any faults or outages in the area.

If there are no outages, it could be the position of your modem in your house. Obstructions such as trees, buildings and hills can impact the strength of your Optus 5G Home Internet signal.

Depending on your location, you may receive a stronger signal in certain parts of your home.

Try moving your modem around until you find the strongest signal.

We recommend moving your modem as close as possible to a window with unobstructed views.

Note: Once you've found a good signal, you’ll need to turn the modem on and off again.
