How we’re helping others thrive

At Optus, we’re passionate about not only providing great service to Australia, but also ensuring local industries can succeed.

We’ve been developing Australian Industry Capability (AIC) for more than 35 years, by investing in the local supply chain and workforce. Our AIC growth philosophy centres around collaboration with a diverse range of industry and government stakeholders. We’re particularly focused on:

  • nurturing and supporting start-ups and SMEs through a brokerage model that strengthens our supply chains and contributes to industry sustainability

  • developing and delivering education, skill and training programs, designed to grow the future Australian space industry workforce pipeline

Our SME brokerage model

It’s important for us to act as a steward of industry growth by partnering with and supporting Australian SMEs, thereby contributing to industry sustainability.

The satellite systems we build enable us to engage with a broad range of Australian organisations and businesses, from start-ups to established businesses. We work with Australian companies and universities on collaborative ideas to address space-based capability gaps, solve problems and pursue new opportunities.

Our team assesses capabilities and concepts through a tiered fit-for-purpose filter, we call our SME Brokerage Model:

  • With a direct ‘fit’ to a current or future Optus Satellite and space systems program, we commence a technical feasibility deep dive

  • Where not a direct fit, but with broader industry application, we facilitate an introduction to our domestic and overseas partners (satellite and earth station manufacturers, control system providers etc)

  • We have active ongoing R&D partnerships with educational institutions and are currently developing industrialisation pathways, including space and cyber

  • We are working with grant bodies to identify and connect stakeholders to channels and sources of funding

Our SME Brokerage Model enables us to onboard AIC capabilities to address vulnerabilities and risks, as well as maximise opportunities.

It offers:

  • Supply chain diversity – as a satellite system builder (as opposed to a satellite or equipment manufacturer), we draw on a vast network of vendors, both domestic and international. Our product-agnostic positioning means that we are able to establish a diverse supply chain
