Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro: First review

Samsung Galaxy Watch5 series is now on sale. The Watch5 series includes both Samsung Galaxy Watch5 and Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro.
Order your Samsung Galaxy Watch5 or Galaxy Watch5 Pro from Optus today.
Here though, I share my thoughts on my (first) look at the Galaxy Watch5 Pro.
You can also read my first take on the Galaxy Watch5 here. Also, check out my thoughts on Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4.
When I held the Watch5 Pro, the first word that came to my mind was “solid”. From the outset, Galaxy Watch5 Pro gives an “aura” of durability, like you could chuck it around a fair bit and nothing would really happen to it (not that I advise you to do that, obviously).
Everything from the make of the watch right to its variant names (containing the word “titanium”, a very durable metal used in manufacturing aircrafts and ships) reinforces the impression of a sturdy device.
Some other features certainly enhance this image but we’ll get to that in a bit.
Visually, the watch is striking, especially the black titanium variant that has a bright red curved line displaying battery levels.
Galaxy Watch5 Pro has a striking display face showing the battery level prominently.
I personally felt this was a refreshing change from the usual practice of showing the battery percentage within a battery symbol. The other colour variant available for this watch is grey titanium.
Watch5 Pro comes in 45mm with the band made of FKM or flurorubber buckle band.
The watch case is made of titanium, a durable metal. Fun fact: Titanium is used to store nuclear waste and in its oxide form, is used in your tennis rackets and golf clubs.
The face of the watch is made with Sapphire Crystal Glass which strictly speaking, is not even glass but a very tough form of aluminium oxide. Legend has it that a sapphire crystal can only get scratched by a diamond. Talk about high standards.
Galaxy Watch5 Pro comes in two colours – black titanium and grey titanium
Samsung claims the Watch5 Pro can give you up to 80 hours of battery when used generally (without GPS, I am guessing) and up to 20 hours when you use GPS continuously[1]. I would comment more about it in the upcoming Watch5 Pro review. For now, let’s move to the GPS feature that looks like it has improved quite a bit.
According to Samsung, Watch5 Pro is equipped with navigational sensors which keeps an eye on route data etc while you’re out[2].
The way Samsung explained to me – imagine you’re hiking and get lost. Your phone doesn’t work. If you’ve switched on the Track Back feature (as it is referred to), your Watch5 Pro will come to your rescue, helping you retrace your steps to where you came from.
I can imagine this Watch5 Pro Track Back feature being very useful for outdoor activities like running, hiking, trekking, camping. Certainly sounds like a great feature that I could use (I have gotten my partner lost more times than I can count) and am looking forward to reviewing it.
From an initial assessment, it looks like the Watch5 Pro may be a good choice for adventure seekers and outdoor activities. You can explore the unknown (a tad safely) with this watch.
While we’re on the subject of sensors, it is worthwhile mentioning the sensor at the back of the Watch5 Pro is better than before. Samsung claims the sensor is more accurate and thinner with less curvature. I think the flatter curvature means it can rest better on your wrist and hence take more accurate readings of your blood pressure, body composition[3][4] etc. Definitely looking forward to comparing the sensor reading on my Watch4 with the sample Watch5 Pro.

With the Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro, you can do all the basic things like measuring your heart rate, or blood pressure levels[3][4] and even doing a body composition analysis. You can track some workouts – a useful feature for personal health goal setting.
You can pair your Galaxy Watch5 Pro with a compatible device so you don’t have to be tethered to your phone all the time . Take a run at the beach without your phone while staying connected.***
