Why more people are turning to meditation

The pandemic brought a drastic shift in the way we live and work. Our social circle became virtual, and the lines between personal and professional space blurred. Forced to spend time indoors, we had to get creative with our daily routines.
Some baked bread while others started their fitness journey online. TikTok and Instagram were flooded with novel ways to tackle this drastic change in lifestyle. Everyone was scrambling to be busy and focus on things they had missed. Not surprisingly, meditation was one practice many people turned to during the chaotic times.
Before we learn why this happens, let’s understand the concept of meditation.
Meditation is a technique used to get clarity, awareness, and focus. This is done by sitting with your eyes closed and focus on the breath. You observe the thoughts that arise and don’t engage with them. With enough practice, you can learn to stay calm in an uncomfortable situation. It is an umbrella term that encompasses distinctive styles such as Tai Chi, mindfulness and Transcendental Meditation. These practices have been around for centuries so why is it that 52 per cent of employers are now providing training and 10 times more children are learning meditation?
Whether you are staying a home dad, a working mother, or a healthcare employee. Burnout is inevitable and so it is vital to take some time off for yourself from your schedule. This doesn’t mean getting busy creating a to-do list or finishing chores. Instead, sitting idly with some soft music in the background will calm your busy mind. The goal of any form of meditation is to be comfortable doing nothing.
Meditation can take years to master but you can start the practice anywhere, anytime. Social media channels are filled with free information, audio, and video recordings about the practice. With so many avenues, it is hard to resist the urge to meditate.
Endless meetings and constantly looking after the needs of children leaves little space to think about ourselves. In the all-consuming lifestyle, you can lose touch with your authentic self. Meditation calms your nerves and helps you observe the peace and positive emotions underlying the jitters.
Even though meditation is about oneself, you don’t have to do it alone. Teaching your kids to meditate is not only good for their mental health but also an opportunity to do a new activity together.
The good news is that you don’t have to invest a lot of money to begin your meditation practice. There are plenty of free articles, YouTube videos, and apps to help you. Optus Sport also offers meditation and mindfulness videos of varying duration. So, you can squeeze in a quick meditation session before a meeting or get deeper into your practice from anywhere.
Now that you know why so many people are enjoying the benefits of meditation, why not give it a try? It could be a faster and easier way of experiencing the bliss of a vacation without the cost or hassle.
