What is 5G mobile and how does it work?

This article outlines what 5G mobile means and what's required to connect to the Optus 5G mobile network.

5G is the fifth generation mobile network. The rollout of the Optus 5G mobile network has begun and is in the early stages of development.

Once our 5G network is fully developed and deployed, it has the potential to deliver:

  1. Faster speeds

Speed measures how fast data can be transferred. 5G will provide fast throughput and will complement our existing 4G network.

  2. Better bandwidth

Bandwidth is the amount of space available to use data. This includes space for downloading files, viewing internet pages and watching content. The larger the bandwidth is, the faster everyone's devices will run.

  3. Quick reaction time

On the 5G network, the time taken for devices to communicate with each other will reduce. For example, the time between clicking on a webpage and the webpage opening will be closer to real-time.

To understand more about how 5G will differ from 4G and 3G, see this article.

Mobile signals are carried over the electromagnetic radio-frequency spectrum. The higher the frequency spectrum, the shorter the distance and time between waves.

The 5G network uses a high frequency range, which provides faster speeds, bandwidth and responsiveness. However, it also means there's a limit on how far the signals can travel.

You can check our website to see where our rapidly expanding 5G network coverage may be available.

When outside our 5G network coverage areas, your phone will automatically access our 4G network.

To access the Optus 5G mobile network, you'll need the following:

  1. 5G coverage

The Optus 5G mobile network is currently available within selected suburbs around Australia.

Check out the Optus 5G mobile coverage map for the latest updates on our 5G network rollout.

  2. 5G capable device

A 5G capable device will work on the Optus 5G mobile networks when in an Optus 5G network coverage zone. Outside of 5G coverage areas, 5G capable devices will switch to the Optus 4G or 3G network.

Not all mobile phones have the ability to connect to the 5G mobile network. Click here for a list of 5G capable Optus devices.

  3. Eligible Optus mobile plan

You can sign up for an Optus mobile phone plan on the Optus website.
