We're making changes to our old Shared Data Plans

Over the years we've continued to update and improve our products, particularly as our customers' needs and technology continue to evolve. This means we'll be saying goodbye to our old Shared Data Plans. If this change impacts you, we will send you an email, SMS or letter (depending on what contact details we have for you).

What are the old Shared Data Plans?

Optus's Shared Data Plans were available to customers on eligible mobile plans between 2014 and 2017.

Eligible customers could purchase shared data SIMs for a one-off cost of $5 each (up to 5 SIMs) with no ongoing monthly access fee. The old Shared Data Plans had no data included but the SIM/s enabled customers to share their mobile data allowance with another eligible services across multiple devices on the same account. This SIM would typically be used for data only and may have been used in devices such as tablets or mobile broadband modems.

Like your mobile phone SIM, SIMs that only use data have their own service number which is in the same format as a mobile phone number. You can find your Shared Data Plan service/s number/s in My Optus App via the yellow icon at the top of the screen after you log in or by selecting the account number referenced in your email after you've logged in to My Account. For further assistance, you can contact us 24/7 in My Optus app or call us on 133 937.

What's changing?

We will be closing down the old Shared Data Plans and replacing them with one, $5 for 5GB per month plan. If you are moving to the new plan, this will be set out in the communication we sent to you. Otherwise, your old Shared Data Plan will be cancelled. Find out more below.

If you have an eligible Optus mobile service on your account with which to share data, you will be moved from your old Shared Data Plan to our new shared data plan. This plan will cost $5 per month and will now include 5GB of data per service, which will be added to the data sharing pool used by all eligible services that share data on your account. The first month of your plan will be free, so you will not be charged for the new plan until your second bill after the change takes effect.

If your old plan included unlimited SMS, this will no longer be the case on your new plan. Your new plan SMS rate is 10c per 160 characters.

You can find more information about your new Shared Data Plan here.

We are saying goodbye to the old Shared Data Plan. To be eligible for the new 5GB Shared Data Plan you must have an eligible Optus mobile. As you don't have an eligible mobile plan on your account, your old Shared Data Plan is being cancelled.

If you would like to discuss your options, you can contact us 24/7 in My Optus app or call us on 133 937.

If you would like to change or cancel your service(s) because of this change, you can do so by contacting us on the options above before the date set out in the communication you received. If you do cancel, you won't be charged a cancellation fee.

FAQs - My plan is cancelled

We are saying goodbye to our old Shared Data Plans. To be eligible for the new 5GB Shared Data Plan, you must have an eligible Optus mobile with which to share data. As you don't have an eligible mobile plan on your account, your old shared data plan will be cancelled.

There is nothing you need to do. The change will happen automatically after the date provided in the communication sent to you. The change may not happen on that exact date and could take a few weeks. We will let you know if there is a significant delay in your plan being cancelled.

Once your plan is cancelled, the device in which you were using the Shared Data Plan SIM will no longer have access to our network. If you want to continue using data on that device, you will need a new data plan (from Optus or another provider) to reconnect to the network.

If you would like to keep your service, you will need to contact us prior to the date set out in your communication.

If you are currently using your Shared Data SIM in a personal medical device or security device, it will stop working when the plan is cancelled, as you will no longer have access to our network. You will need to connect the device to a new data plan with Optus or another provider. We recommend you do this prior to 8th December 2023.

Your data add-ons will be cancelled at the same time as your Shared Data Plan.
