How to use this guide
- WiFi technology indicates capability (WiFi 6 > WiFi 5 > WiFi 4).
- Plan compatibility is typical guidance based on the WiFi technology.
- Some high-speed tiers are only available on FTTP and HFC connections.
- Legend: Yes = compatible with plan speed; Limited = may not reach top plan speed over WiFi; No = won’t reach top plan speed over WiFi.
Optus Modems
Your current modem or router, and how it is set up in your premises, could limit you from utilising the maximum speed of your internet plan.
- For our new Home Fast (FTTP, HFC) speeds, we recommend a modem that supports Wi-Fi 5 or higher.
- For our new Home Superfast and Home Ultrafast speed, a Wi-Fi 6 capable modem is recommended.
- For other consumer plans, Wi-Fi 5 or higher is recommended.

The Typical Busy Period Speeds advertised for the new nbn speed tiers are our best estimate, based on the available speed data. This is not based on the speeds observed for a representative sample (with the exception of the Ultrafast download speed which is not changing). Once more data is available, the Typical Busy Period Speeds for the new nbn speed tiers will be updated accordingly.
*Limited: You might not get the full speed benefit over a Wi-Fi connection. For the best experience, especially on devices that stream or download a lot (like gaming consoles or smart TVs), we recommend connecting them with an ethernet cable.
