Satellite mobile/small cells
Australia’s an incredible country. But cellular coverage in remote and regional areas is a constant challenge, due to the geography and lack of infrastructure. Our geostationary satellites offer an end-to-end optimised network delivering 3G and LTE mobile coverage.
Small cells, big possibilities
Optus satellite’s software-defined, low-power, low-impact small cell cellular base stations deliver 3G and LTE Optus mobile coverage.
These cells support:
- A typical coverage area of up to 7km radius, subject to terrain and antenna elevation
- VoLTE, including emergency calls
- Speeds of up to 70Mbps download and 6 Mbps upload
This service is separate to direct to mobile LEO offerings.
Efficient deployment
Depending on your requirements, our satellite small cells can be deployed standalone, or attached to existing infrastructure, including:
- On-grid rooftop installation with battery backup
- Off-grid standalone solar powered deployment with high availability battery backup
- Custom-designed installation on existing or new poles or tower
Optus has skilled contractors able to deploy these cells while complying with related regulatory and deployment codes.
Optus Satellite has developed cells on wheels, known as an Optus Satcat, to provide temporary mobile coverage during disasters or emergencies. We also have the capability to deploy these transportable cells for temporary mobile coverage at remote camps and facilities. Outdoor femtocells Our lower power, lightweight, outdoor femtocells provide LTE coverage to a smaller area (typically up to 1km radius) and a smaller number of subscribers.
