Driving productivity and digital resilience in Australia’s Ports

Posted by Optus Enterprise, 7 January 2026

Australia’s ports are the lifeblood of trade and logistics, yet they face unprecedented challenges: fragmented connectivity, legacy systems, rising regulatory demands, and an increasingly complex cyber risk landscape.

At a recent Roundtable event, held at James Cook University in Townsville, industry leaders and Optus’s digital experts explored how innovation can unlock resilience and growth.

The message was clear: secure digitalisation is no longer optional – it’s foundational.

The complexity challenge

Ports operate in a permanently complex environment. Cyber-enabled risks cascade across sectors, regulatory frameworks evolve rapidly, and sustainability pressures mount.

Professor Nico Adams, Optus Chair of Digital Innovation & IoT at James Cook University, reminded executives that ports need a structured approach to digital maturity.

His Port Digitalisation Mini-Capability Assessment revealed that most organisations rated themselves low on digital maturity (levels 1–2). While cybersecurity was relatively advanced, digitalisation lagged behind.

This gap poses a strategic risk: without integrated digital strategies, ports cannot achieve operational efficiency nor resilience.

Cybersecurity: Beyond controls

Dr. Mamello Thinyane, an Associate Professor in the STEM unit at the University of South Australia and Optus Chair of Cybersecurity and Data Science, highlighted lessons from the costliest cyber-attack in maritime history – the 2017 NotPetya incident.

His advice:

  • Manage supply chain risk
  • Patch vulnerabilities
  • Harden networks
  • Rehearse backup and recovery plans.

Cyber resilience is not a checklist. It’s a continuous journey requiring robust frameworks and tested incident response playbooks. In today’s risk climate, organisations must be comfortable with complexity and proactive in building resilience capabilities.

The role of Private 5G

Technology is a catalyst, not a silver bullet. Optus 5G Campus Network offers a foundation for transformation:

  • Dedicated connectivity & Edge Computing: Low latency and secure local data breakout for real-time operations.
  • Licensed spectrum access: Reliable performance tailored to geography and use case.
  • Connected worker solutions: Enhancing safety, reducing insurance claims, and supporting ESG goals.
  • Rapid deployment: Starter kits enable proof-of-concept in days, not weeks.

From vessel tracking and automated cranes to digital twins and predictive maintenance, private 5G unlocks Industry 4.0 use cases that drive productivity and sustainability.

Key takeaways for Port Leaders

  1. Digitalisation is strategic, not tactical. Build maturity across leadership, skills, processes, and technology.
  2. Cybersecurity must evolve. Move beyond controls to comprehensive risk management and resilience frameworks.
  3. Private 5G is a game-changer. It enables automation, intelligent operations, and ESG outcomes.
  4. Collaboration is critical. Ecosystem-wide orchestration accelerates transformation and mitigates systemic risks.
