Keeping kids safer with password power

The online world is growing - but how do you keep your kids safe while they’re in it? Start with a strong password.
Ah, to have the relatively carefree life of most teenagers.
Sheltered by a parent or school with few responsibilities, very little tax to pay, a body that can bounce off almost anything (have you seen a skate video lately?) and a full head of hair that’ll grow back from most youthful lapses in judgement.
But, there’s always something to watch out for, no matter how sheltered you think they are, especially in the wide - and sometimes wild – online world. Luckily, protecting them from some of those dangers could be as simple as teaching some simple password etiquette.
That’s why we’re supporting them through our award-winning Digital Thumbprint program. After all, everyone has a significant stake in helping young Australians stay happy, safe, responsible and positive online, well into the future.
Tips for a stronger password
The problem with passwords is that too many young people believe one is enough. That’s why, if a hacker can figure out one of the passwords your kids are using for just one of the many apps and games, there’s a good chance they can crack open the rest and access something sensitive, like personal information.
The best way to go is to get separate passwords for each account.
And remember:
- Strong passwords should have a mix of upper-case and lower-case letters, numbers and symbols in them.
- Make sure your password has nothing to do with your name, birthday or address.
- Change each password regularly.
- Use at least 10 characters, although the longer the better.
- Longer passwords take longer to crack.
- Don't keep passwords on your phone or computer.
