Google Pixel 7: Design and hardware
After a major shift in design for Google Pixel 6, Google has made subtle and sophisticated changes to the Pixel 7 phone. As a result, you may not notice anything really different. But that is not to say the changes aren’t notable.
Design changes in Pixel 7 vs Pixel 6
A modified rear camera housing strip design:
The strip housing the camera lenses at the back of the Pixel 7 now has a recycled matte aluminium frame instead of glass which was used on the Pixel 6. Also, the cameras are now in a cylindrical cut out rather than the conventional spherical design.
Focus on recycled materials: According to Google, Pixel 7’s matte aluminium enclosure is made from 100% recycled content. Overall, recycled materials form about 19% of the phone in terms of weight7.
Pixel 7 phone colour now a single tone: Google Pixel 7 comes in two colours – Obsidian and Lemongrass. Google has removed the dual tone colours used in the previous Pixel series which has been replaced with a sleek, single colour design across the phone with a complimenting aluminium bar.
Protection and durability: Pixel 7 is designed with smooth Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus™ cover glass to aid against scratch damage.
Pixel 7 Display – Pixel 7 is smaller than Pixel 6 and Pixel 6a:
The latest Pixel 7 is 6.1 inches versus Pixel 6’s 6.4 inch and sports a Full High Definition Plus OLED display1.
Refresh rate on the Pixel 7 can go up to 90 Hz2, and the latest base model is 25% brighter than the Pixel 6 series.8 Like Google Pixel 6, Pixel 7 also features an Always-on Display and At a Glance widget that displays the time, date, weather, temperature, upcoming calendar appointments and other notifications.
Google Pixel 7 - Tensor processor:
In the Pixel 7 series, Google introduces the next generation of its Tensor processor – the Google Tensor G2.
The processor, combined with Google’s software prowess, powers Pixel’s unique features like Live Translate9, plus it gives you the best photo and video quality on a Pixel yet.
Along with the Titan M2 security chip, Google will also be introducing a built-in VPN in both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro which is coming soon10.
The Face Unlock feature deserves a special shoutout arming the Pixel 7 series with a hands-free unlocking option and I am keen to try it out.
Google Pixel 7 – Camera: This is where the magic happens
As always, whenever there is a new Pixel launch, camera developments are one of the most awaited features and the Pixel 7 looks like it will not disappoint.
Google Pixel 7 comes with a dual camera – a 50 MP main camera and 12MP Ultra wide lens.11
Pixel 7 camera features include HDR+ functionality, Night Sight, Motion Mode, Magic Eraser12, and Real Tone.
A new feature is the Cinematic Blur function that allows you to remove noise in your photos and videos (available while video recording).
