7 signs it’s time to get a new phone

It’s hard to imagine life without a mobile phone these days. They’ve become an integral part of our lives as a way to stay in touch with our friends, family, and even work.

From communication to productivity and entertainment, these portable devices have changed how we interact with the world for good. As technology evolves however, there comes a time when your mobile phone will need an upgrade so you can continue to enjoy the connectivity you’ve come to expect.

Here are seven signs that it’s time to consider upgrading your device.

1.      Slow performance and lagging

Does your phone seem less responsive than it once was? If you find yourself waiting ages for apps to load or you can’t easily multitask, it might be time for an upgrade.

New mobile phones come with faster processors and more RAM (Random Access Memory) which may help provide smoother performance and seamless user experience. Just like in a computer, RAM is used to store the phone’s operating system. It’s also where your in-use app data is kept so you can run several applications at once.

Tip: when buying a new phone intended for multitasking and high performance, consider the included RAM size. Bear in mind that this is different from the storage (GB) size.

2.      Dwindling battery life

One of the main signs your phone is past its prime is how the battery performs, or rather doesn’t. If your battery discharges quickly and is slow to recharge, it could be a sign that it’s deteriorating.

Not convinced? Pop into a retail store, check out the new mobile phone line-up and see how quickly they charge while you’re in the store.  A new phone with a new battery will mean you don’t have to constantly find power outlets and worry over your battery life.

Tip: you can check a phone’s battery capacity by looking at its specifications. It is usually listed as a value measured against mAh which indicates a unit of electric charge.

3.      Outdated software and security

Software for mobiles is constantly evolving. When you use an older phone, you may not be able to receive the necessary software updates to keep your phone safe from security breaches as the phone may have insufficient memory. A new phone means you can get all the latest software advancements and security patches.

The new era of smartphones also means in-built artificial intelligence (AI) tools, which are designed to cater to your everyday mobile experience. Different brands will have varying in-built mobile AI-systems, although some features are available across multiple phone systems.

4.      Cracked or damaged screen

A cracked or damaged screen can affect the use of your phone, is potentially dangerous to use, and can damage the internal components. If your phone's screen is cracked or damaged in other ways, it may be time to choose from the new line of smartphones - many of which have reinforced screens and shatter-resistant glass to better protect your investment.

If you’re looking for additional protection after purchasing your new device, you may want to consider adding on Optus Upgrade and Protect.

5.      Insufficient storage space

Running out of storage space can be frustrating, especially when you want to take lots of photos and videos or download apps. If you find yourself needing to delete files or apps to free up space, it's time to upgrade to a mobile phone with more storage capacity. Newer models offer generous storage options.

6.      Outdated camera technology

For many users, a smartphone's camera is a super important feature. If your current phone can’t take clear images it may be time for an upgrade. New phones sport amazing camera technology like improved low-light performance and higher megapixel counts that will leave your old phone in the shade.

What’s more, most new flagship smartphones now have AI-powered editing tools that can help you perfect your photos and videos. From background removals and image reimagining, to audio distortion, there are now many post-production mobile tools you can play around with.

7.      Compatibility with 5G

5G connectivity is the latest generation of wireless technology and improves on 4G with faster download speeds, minimal latency and more connectivity potential. If your current phone doesn’t have 5G compatibility, upgrading to a 5G-capable device will allow you to take full advantage of the latest mobile network technology and amazing online experience1.

Naturally everyone’s circumstances differ and the decision to upgrade your mobile phone is personal. By recognising the signs that your phone is no longer keeping up with the times may help you decide the right time for you to get a new phone.
