Optus took flight at this year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, delivering an unforgettable spectacle with our “Optus Free as a Bird” float. The energy, joy, and unity displayed on Oxford Street was a true testament to the power of diversity and inclusion.
At the heart of our float was a giant, dazzling rainbow lorikeet, adorned with shimmering sequins and vibrant lighting. As the flock of 80 Optus employees and friends danced their way up Oxford Street, the atmosphere was electric. Their colourful wings and the bird’s voluminous rainbow fabric tail created a mesmerising vision of unity and self-expression.
The float embodied the spirit of freedom, amplifying our message that everyone should feel empowered to be their authentic selves – no matter what. It was a powerful symbol of courage, pride, and community, soaring through the sky in celebration of love and inclusivity.
First time marcher, Felicity Ross, Optus Managing Director of Corporate Affairs and Marketing, said, “The 2025 theme Free to be perfectly captures Optus’ vision for a future that celebrates individuality, authenticity and inclusivity.”
Deb Collins, Optus Senior Director, Delivery Enablement and Chair of the Express Yourself Network, said, “We’re committed to further cultivating an open and accepting environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging and has the confidence to speak up. With pride and purpose, we are loud and proud in our support and look forward to driving visibility, learning and awareness.”
Optus was honoured to stand alongside the LGBTQIA+ community, reinforcing our commitment to fostering a workplace and society where everyone can thrive. The “Optus Free as a Bird” float represented the joy of being unapologetically yourself, reminding us all that when we come together, we are stronger, prouder, and freer.
This spectacular float was made possible through a collaboration between Optus, creative agency Emotive, and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras team. The concept, inspired by the theme “Free to Be”, perfectly aligned with our values of empowerment, diversity, and inclusion.

Building on our ongoing commitment, Optus is proud to announce the continuation of our partnership with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras through 2025 and 2026. As a Major Partner, we will take on a prominent role in supporting Mardi Gras events, including the Parade and the naming rights of the Food Village stage, a dedicated family area at the ever-popular Fair Day event.
The 2025 Mardi Gras theme, Free to Be, resonates deeply with Optus’ mission to create a future where everyone is free to embrace their individuality—whether in the workplace or at home. This extended partnership reaffirms our dedication to inclusivity, diversity, and self-expression.
Reflecting on this incredible event, we are more inspired than ever to continue championing representation and freedom of expression. Our “Optus Free as a Bird” float was more than just a parade highlight; it was a symbol of hope, courage, and unity.
