Meet Declan – Optus Business Centre Regional South Australia

The Optus Business Centre Regional South Australia is headed up by Declan, his brilliant leadership team …and his faithful schnauzer, Zeus, who can often be found roaming the office!
It takes a special kind of person (or canine) to work with Declan at the team at Optus Business Centre Regional South Australia.
“If you want to join our team you have to reflect the company values of; humble, hungry, fun, funky and honest, but most importantly, future tolerant,” says Declan.
“It’s our team’s job to help our clients prepare for the future. And we are committed to seeing that happen.”
The team of 23 amazing people who support more than 2,500 local businesses in the South Australia including the Eyre Peninsula, Alexandria and Ceduna, keep up with digital change that’s happening all around us.
The team recently went above and beyond to create a bespoke solution for South Australia's leader in landscape construction, horticulture, pest management, UrbanVirons.
“UrbanVirons as a lot of remote workers, and we helped them with solutions to help them mobilise,” says Declan.
“We equipped their arborists with ruggedized tablets and the connectivity they needed so they could get up and down trees and have access to the mission-critical information they need to do their job.”
This also enabled UrbanVirons to capture the tree at that point in time and assess risks with predictive imaging technology on the spot.
“When it comes to these situations, time is critical. Trees can fall on people and property, and the technology we equipped UrbanVirons with helps them make these vital decisions efficiently.”
Efficiency is also key when it comes to those less-than-desirable tasks. The team assisted the City of Alexandria by connecting their septic tanks to the internet of things to monitor waste levels.
“The big septic tanks are now armed with sim cards, so that when the tanks reach a certain level alarms are triggered so that the council monitor the situation without having to pull on their gumboots to prevent sewage running down the street!” says Declan. “These are steps toward the smart city of the future, and we want to be a part of it!”
Whilst the team have a lot on their plate, they make time to have fun and give back to their community.
“When we were called on to help Foodbank with new landline and internet services, I found out that they supported 150,000 South Australians with food on a weekly basis!” reflects Declan. “So, we just had to find a way to lend a hand.”
“For one of our recent team days, we donated half a day to helping Foodbank load palettes for delivery,” says Declan. “It was tremendously rewarding to know we were helping our community.”
“Every quarter the team does something such as axe throwing and gin tasting, but this by far received the biggest positive reaction from this – from giving back!” And that says a lot about the team.
“We really want to focus on offering outstanding service and lead the way in our industry with integrity. Our competitors are selling on coverage alone. But we’re here to offer so much more,” says Declan.
“We aren’t just selling to the community – we are embedded in it, and here to ensure its success.”
