What’s hot on Optus SubHub in April

There’s a varied and exciting range of new releases in April from our entertainment partners. Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror drops Season 7 in 2025, and it's not playing nice. Six episodes of pure tech terror, including a sequel to the highly acclaimed episode USS Callister from Season 4. 

Exactly what we've been waiting for. 

This season is different. Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson are back, diving deeper into a virtual universe that'll make your skin crawl. 

The cast is impressive with Paul Giamatti, Peter Capaldi, Emma Corrin, Awkwafina, Rashida Jones, Issa Rae and Chris O'Dowd. It's like a who's who of actors ready to mess with your head. 

This time around, Brooker's not holding back. At all. This is Black Mirror stripped down and it’s pure science fiction and nightmare fuel. Each episode a punch to our tech-addicted reality. 

We’re told to expect the unexpected in terms of visuals. Think hyper-stylised landscapes and minimalist scenes that'll make you squirm. This isn't just a show, it's a warning. 

From virtual worlds to technological horror, Black Mirror continues to ask the questions we're too scared to answer. Technology's got teeth and they seem to be biting. 

For those new to Black Mirror no problems. Each season is a ‘standalone’ anthology TV series so you can dip in at any point.  

The anthology delves into multiple genres, mainly featuring near-future dystopian settings with science fiction technologies— creating a unique form of speculative fiction. Drawing inspiration from The Twilight Zone, the series examines the role of technology and media in modern social challenges. Brooker authors most episodes, collaborating with executive producer Annabel Jones.

The name G20 or Group of 20, an intergovernmental forum, probably won’t ever be the “G20” you think of after seeing this. This is quite the thriller.  

In Patricia Riggen’s G20, Viola Davis is President Danielle Sutton, trapped in a G20 Cape Town summit that’s gone wrong. Terrorists, deepfakes, global chaos and one leader who won't back down. Not a great situation.

Antony Starr plays Rutledge, a villain with tech that can rewrite reality. His plan is to take down world leaders. But Sutton's not your average politician.  

There is an attack on the summit which sees Sutton switch modes from diplomacy to survival real fast. With her family in danger, world leaders taken hostage, this isn't a negotiation and there’s no room for niceties.

Davis brings to life raw, smart, calculated survival instincts. Forget the Hollywood action hero nonsense.  

Plus, amongst this all, you’ll care about the Pres’s family, thanks to Anthony Anderson as her husband, Marsai Martin and Christopher Farrar. The cast also includes Ramón Rodríguez playing Agent Manny Ruiz, Elizabeth Marvel as Joanna Worth, Sabrina Impacciatore as Elena Romano, Douglas Hodge playing Oliver Everett, Antony Starr as Rutledge and Christopher Farrar as Demetrius Sutton.

Riggen’s direction delivers a rolling series of tight shots combined with brutal action with no wasted moments that builds tension that must be released somehow. All ratcheting up to a big crescendo. Can’t provide any more deets. You’ll need to watch it yourself when it drops.

Release date: 27 March   

Based on the best-selling novel by Liane Moriarty, The Last Anniversary peels back the layers of a unique family tree exposing nothing is what it seems on the surface. Set on Scribbly Gum Island, a place of many secrets, the series is a wickedly funny, heartfelt dramedy wrapped in a gripping mystery about family, motherhood and the women who define the generations that come after them. 

Teresa Palmer stars as Sophie Honeywell who discovers family secrets beneath the island’s seemingly idyllic surface. The suspicious locals add tension as Sophie unravels the complex history of this unique community. 

Palmer heads a stellar cast including Miranda Richardson, Danielle Macdonald, and Helen Thomson, alongside Claude Scott-Mitchell, Uli Latukefu, Susan Prior, Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, and Charlie Garber. 

Director John Polson captures stunning visuals across Sydney and the Hawkesbury River, with a score that enhances both suspense and emotional moments. Oh my. 

And with its close, island-community mood, mystery, complex characters, and picturesque Australian setting, The Last Anniversary looks to be a standout drama for 2025. 

Aussie authenticity is ensured thanks to Nicole Kidman being a producer on the series, and Moriarity herself having involved in the production of what promises to be a very special experience.

Release date: 30 March  

MobLand, explores two generations of gangsters, their operations, tangled relationships, and the fixer they rely on to clean up their messes. It’s an intriguing way for Guy Ritchie to step into TV land.  

Seems there are criminals, power plays and not a lot of mercy. 

The cast is something else again. Pierce Brosnan leads as a crime boss on the edge. Not just another mobster. A king watching his empire crumble. Helen Mirren is his tough as nails, yet always-stylish wife – is there no role this actor can’t nail? Tom Hardy plays the enforcer—brutal, loyal and one wrong move from destruction. 

The cast is a weapon in itself, what with Brosnan, Mirren and Hardy. Then add in Paddy Considine and Joanne Froggatt. Pardon the metaphors but this isn't just a lineup, it's a murderers' row of talent. Nuff said. 

MobLand has signature Ritchie style throughout with fast dialogue and sharp turns. The kind of storytelling that makes you lean in. Co-written by Jez Butterworth and Ronan Bennett, this isn't just another crime drama. It's a hurricane. The trailer grabs your full attention particularly with lines like, “We don’t ask, we take” and “Power is a hungry thing”. All backed by the aptly chosen Rolling Stones track ‘Sympathy for the Devil’. Yep, this is going to be big.
