What we’re watching in June 2026

I am a massive fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender – that being the original animated series from 2005. It was an awesome story about elemental ‘benders’ from nations across the world, and the titular ‘Avatar’, Aang, who must work with his friends to save the world from the cruel rule of the fire benders.

Avatar: The Last Airbender received a live-action remake in 2024 on Netflix, and while I didn’t jump on the show at the time, I’m very keen to see how the live action version handles this leg of the story, which goes in more on the Earth kingdom. I’d recommend both versions of the Avatar stories, if you’re keen on some awesome fantasy storytelling in June.

In their fourth collaboration together, Academy Award winner (and always the crowd favourite) Emma Stone once again has teamed up with director Yorgos Lanthimos for their latest film, Bugonia.

An English-language remake of the well-received Korean film, ‘Save the Green Planet’, Bugonia is a dark comedy thriller following Teddy Gatz (Jesse Plemons) a conspiracy obsessed beekeeper and his autistic cousin Don (Aidan Delbis) who kidnap a high-powered pharmaceutical CEO who they believe may be an alien sent to earth to destroy mankind.

As the two hold Michelle (Stone) captive and attempt to expose her true intent and identity, they begin to spiral into their own psychological conflict and not only question their own motives for doing what they’ve done but also each other.
Who would you trust? Your delusional cousin or someone who might be an alien?

Nominated for four Oscars including Best Motion Picture, Bugonia is perfect for those looking for a quirky and satirical take on power imbalance mixed with a little bit of cinema weirdness. Did we also mention, Emma Stone is starring? Stream now and enjoy!

If political intrigue and global-scale conflict is your fictional jam, then Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War should be on your list.

Starring John Krasinski (The Office) as the titular hero, Ghost War follows Jack Ryan being thrust from his mundane civilian life (after leaving the CIA) back into the world of the CIA covert ops. His old boss and friend James Greer (Wendell Pierce) drags him back for a seemingly simple task: pick up a package from an MI6 contact in Dubai but when the contact is killed in front of Ryan, suddenly he finds himself waist-deep in something far bigger.

Even if you’re not a soccer fan and couldn’t care less about England or sports, you’ve probably still heard somewhere that England are rubbish at so-called ‘penalty shootouts’ and we always loose when a game depends on them (normally to Germany). Such was the case in the 1996 soccer World Cup semi-final, when England player Gareth Southgate bravely stepped up to the penalty spot with the nation’s hopes on his shoulders, did terribly, lost us the match and earned himself a lifetime of ridicule.

Until that is, more than 20 years later, he redeemed himself in a return to the game as England manager and spearheaded the most successful England World Cup campaign in generations, reinventing the team into a gloriously tough, skilful, collegial force that was, among many things we’d never seen from England before, great at penalty shootouts.

As one of the many millions of long-suffering English soccer fans, I was dizzy with delight at the time and I’m dizzy with delight again at thought of being able to relive the experience by bingeing Dear England, a fictionalised account of the team’s struggles and successes, based on extensive research and interviews.

Joseph Fiennes ditches his baddie persona from The Handmaid’s Tale to become the hero of the piece, playing an excellent Southgate that actually sounds exactly like him if you close your eyes (he was nominated for an Olivier Award for playing the part in the play of the same name). Supporting cast includes Jodie Whittaker, the first female Doctor Who, as team psychologist Pippa Grange, and Will Antenbring (Mr Loverman) as star striker Harry Kane.

I’m not normally one to watch dramatisations about sport, but this is much more than that. This is about reminiscing a once in a lifetime experience, getting goose bumps, shouting at the telly and shedding a tear or two of joy in the emotional moments. I can’t wait!

While the above shows are what we’re most excited for, there’s a lot of other content that we’re keen on streaming.

Season four of The Legend of Vox Machina begins streaming on Prime Video on June 3, perfect for animation lovers that love fantasy adventures (particularly if you love Critical Role and Dungeons and Dragons). You may also be keen on season five of Clarkson’s Farm, also streaming on Prime Video on June 3, telling the story of Jeremy Clarkson as he manages the Diddly Squat farm and the pressures of doing so.

Over on Netflix, you may be interested in Season one of thriller I Will Find You, streaming on June 18, following a father who is wrongfully serving a life sentence for murdering his son – he learns his son may be alive, leading him out of prison to find the truth. You may also be keen on the comedy Little Brother, streaming on June 26, following a successful real estate agent whose life is thrown into disarray when his little brother comes back into the picture.
