Looking for a regular dose of your favourite sport? Take advantage of the off season to catch up on the latest in competitive sports and recaps from 2022 with the newest episodes from top sports reality shows.
Available to stream on platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, there’s a sports reality show for basically every sport you could be interested in. Below, we’ve compiled a list of the best-rated sports reality shows you can watch with Optus SubHub.
One of the most popular sports reality shows to date is Drive to Survive. Arguably pioneered by fan-favourite and our very own Chief of Optimism – Daniel Ricciardo – the five-part Netflix-exclusive series has brought the racing sport to mainstream attention since 2019. Now on its fifth season, Drive to Survive takes viewers into the drama-filled world that is Formula 1, bringing each season’s behind-the-scenes to the forefront.
From heated discussions involving team principals, to beef between drivers, to the engineering behind some of the sport’s historically best-performing racing cars, Drive to Survive is a great show if you’re curious about everything F1. The show is both educational for new and casual F1 viewers, as well as a technical refresh for avid fans. It also helps that much of the show is filmed on location (in the pits where the races are being held, at team headquarters, or at the driver’s and team principal’s private lodgings), so you can get an authentic peek into each race around the world, including Australia’s very own Grand Prix.
If you’re curious about catching up with F1 this 2023 season, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne is only a couple of days away. Optus is proudly partnering with the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2023 to bring Australia’s fastest 5G network to the trackside for event visitors to enjoy. The OPTU5VR Track Tour will also be available at the event, where guests will have the opportunity to jump in the driver’s seat with Daniel Ricciardo.
A collaborative production between Netflix and PGA Tour, Full Swing is a high-budget docudrama following the wins and losses of professional golfers, on and off the course. Covering all four main golfing championships in 2022, Full Swing gives you a never-seen-before look into the careers and lives of world-ranking golfers, including Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau, and Rickie Fowler.
Full Swing takes professional golfers out of their usual press conference and on-course environments and captures their authentic selves. Not only can you get to know your favourite professional golfer on a deeper level, but you also get a peek into their prep routines, competition know-how, and golfing techniques. In a sport where one miscalculation or poor shot can ruin all chances of winning, Full Swing recreates all of the intensity, emotion, and suspense behind the golfing sport for you to experience. The show has been incredibly well-received and is confirmed for a second season next year.
Another Netflix-exclusive sports reality show is Break Point, a behind-the-scenes series covering the lives of the world’s top tennis players as they compete at Grand Slams and the ATP and WTA tours. The action-packed and drama-filled docuseries features many of your favourite tennis talents, including Aussie-bred Nick Kyrgios, Grand Slam-champion Andy Roddick, world-number-six Félix Auger-Aliassimme, Spanish-star Paula Badosa, and many more.
Break Point gets up close and personal with many fan-favourite players, documenting their physical and mental training, relationships with their coaches, and even family life as they prepare for gruelling and competitive tournaments and Grand Slams all over the world. It’s a great show for avid tennis fans eager for more insider content as well as casual followers of the sport who just want to get an idea of life as a professional tennis player. The show’s first five episodes are currently available on Netflix.
At the moment, there are multiple instalments in the All or Nothing docuseries, covering both American football and English football. Amazon Prime features three of the Premier League’s most popular teams – Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur and showcases the highs and lows of each team without filters. Each season gives you an insider peek into the operations, practices, and competitive matches of each team, taking you on a real and emotional journey as teams strive for domestic and European success.
You can also go behind the scenes of American football teams (both professional and college NFL) such as The Michigan Wolverines, Arizona Cardinals, and Los Angeles Rams with other instalments of the miniseries. Each series covers a season with the teams and even includes exclusive commentary from each respective team’s legendary coaches.
The Test is a sports reality series documenting the Australian men’s cricket team following their sandpaper cheating scandal in 2018. Currently two seasons in, The Test showcases the Australian cricket team’s efforts to rebuild their culture and regain their place at the top of their competition. The series covers each player’s raw emotions and attitudes to their team’s reform in an honest way and tells a story about leadership during the toughest of times.
A transparent approach with an original premise, The Test is a great watch for not only Australian cricket fans but cricket fans from all over the world. A local favourite that simply gets better with each episode, The Test is a must-watch if you have Amazon Prime.
Slightly different to the rest of the sports reality shows on this list is The Last Dance. A video documentary dedicated to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls during the 1997-98 season, The Last Dance showcases never-seen-before footage of basketball’s most iconic athletes as they play professionally as well as exclusive interviews with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Steve Kerr, and other notable names in the sport.
The Last Dance takes you through competition with the Bulls from 1992 to 1998, from the downs of rumoured mismanagement in the team, to the highs of the Bulls’ sixth championship and Jordan’s last season with the team. For basketball fans all over the world, The Last Dance is a treasure trove of never-released footage on one of the most historically decorated teams in the sport.
Covering a lesser-known sport, Cheer documents popular American cheerleading in a substantial six-part series. It follows the high-nationally-ranked Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team of forty cheerleaders and their journey in the National Cheerleading Championship. Already two seasons in, the series covers what’s lesser known of the billion-dollar competitive cheerleading industry, including the brute athleticism competitors train daily to hone.
Cheer focuses on Monica Aldama’s coaching of the decorated Texan cheer team and her devotion to the college sport. Having built the team personally from the ground up, Aldama and her athletes showcase their abilities as one of the best cheerleading teams in the U.S. in this docuseries.
