And once you’re finished, head into the kitchen and whip up a meal with The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook, which is also available on Kindle Unlimited. Featuring over 150 treats inspired by the series, you’re sure to find something to impress wizards and muggles alike.

The Hunger Games

Speaking of a series that’s beloved by millions, The Hunger Games is also available on Kindle Unlimited.

Created by Suzanne Collins, this series might have originally been written for young adults, but it quickly found a broader audience. Throughout the trilogy, we follow heroine Katniss Everdeen as she takes part in a battle royale against other young survivors.

If you liked The Hunger Games movies, you’re sure to enjoy the books, which dive deeper into characters and their motivations, and provide plenty of page-turning thrills.

Earth Abides

If you’re in the mood for more post-apocalyptic fiction, check out Earth Abides. While it was written in 1949 by George R. Stewart, its story and themes are as timely today as ever.

The plot revolves around a man who retreats to the mountains of California to do his thesis on geography. After being struck down by a snake bite, he reawakens from his fever to discover that civilisation as he knows it has crumbled. Instead, he and other survivors need to rely on primitive tools and their wits to survive.

The book won the inaugural International Fantasy Award in 1951, and has been a major influence on other books in the genre – even serving as a major inspiration for Stephen King when he wrote The Stand.

Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel

You might have read Anne of Green Gables before, but never like this. Reimagined as a graphic novel, the incredible visuals and imaginative format offer readers a whole new side to this classic story.

It’s just one of the graphic novels and comics available on Kindle Unlimited. There’s also the legendary Sandman by Neil Gaiman, the manga Attack on Titan and even The Essential Calvin and Hobbes.

A River in Darkness

It’s maybe not the lightest subject, but this harrowing tale of a man’s escape from North Korea is still essential reading.

The great thing about this book is that it doesn’t just focus on author Masaji Ishikawa’s escape (we won’t spoil how he actually does it – that’s best discovered for yourself). It also delves into the history, society and politics of North Korea, which, considering how reclusive it is as a nation, is fascinating reading.

With so many titles at such a great price, it’s hard to find many faults with Amazon’s service. If there is one minor quibble, it’s that you’re not going to find many brand new, day one releases on the service.
