Chaz Mostert storms Sydney at SuperNight

The annual Sydney SuperNight supercar event was held on 28 – 30 July at the Sydney Motorsport Park at Eastern Creek.

Ella Dingwall was there - here’s her trackside report.

The weekend was up and down for Walkinshaw Andretti United, with qualifying pace still proving to be the Achilles heel. However, the race pace for the ‘Mobil 1 Optus rocket’ was among the fastest on track which meant that Chaz Mostert and Nick Percat were able to battle it out with the best over the weekend.

Friday rolled around with zero track time for Supercars, meaning Saturday was a jam-packed day. Practice 1, 2 and qualifying in a 3-part format (similar to F1) was done, and of course, the race under the lights to finish off the day.

Saturday was definitely a day to remember for the #25 side of the garage, with Chaz starting P9, fighting his way up to finish P2, completing the day with his well-known shoey celebration on the podium, ending the night with fireworks. Nick was faced with steering issues limiting the drivability of his Mobil 1 NTI car leaving him coming home in P20.

Qualifying again proved a challenge for the boys on Sunday, with Chaz qualifying P16 and Nick P25. However, the exceptional race pace again came to save the day, and Chaz brought the number 25 car up to P7. Although Nick struggled again, he did well to make it up into P19 before the chequered flag was waved symbolising the end of the Sydney Super Night race weekend.

Once the dust settled on the weekend, it proved to be a step forward, mainly for Chaz. Nick’s race pace improved until his steering problems became more prominent, limiting his ability to move up the order.

If the team can somehow manage to find the same pace in qualifying that they’re enjoying during the race, I’m sure that first (of many) wins for this season won’t be too far down the track.

No doubt the team at the factory will be working really hard to ensure the car is at its peak for the next round at The Bend in South Australia, beginning on 18 August 18. Can’t wait to see how they go!
