Getting set up

Am I eligible to get Optus Xtra?

If you can answer yes to the following two questions, you're good to go:

  1. Do you have an Android phone (like Samsung, HTC, Nexus etc.)?

  2. Are you on any of the following Optus Prepaid plans? Prepaid Ultimate Plus, Prepaid Daily Maximiser, My Prepaid Ultimate, My Prepaid Ultra, My Prepaid Ultra Plus, My Prepaid Daily Plus or the $2 Days 4G Ready plans?

How do I create an Optus Xtra account?

To earn rewards through the Optus Xtra app, you first need to sign up and give us some information about yourself to create an Optus Xtra account. You also need to agree that all the required information you give us is honest and accurate, and that you'll keep us updated if your information changes.

When you create your account, we'll make sure you're on an eligible Optus Prepaid plan. If you are, we'll send you a verification code via SMS to complete your Optus Xtra registration.

Not all Optus Prepaid plans are eligible to earn Optus Xtra rewards at this stage because of the way the app works.

You can also delete your Optus Xtra Account at any time by uninstalling the app.

What happens if I don't get my verification code via SMS?

If you haven't received an SMS or are having issues confirming the code through the app, get in touch with our Optus Xtra care team at optusxtra@optus.com.au.

How long does it take for Optus Xtra content to start appearing on my lock screen?

You'll see your first ad around 24 hours after you've signed up. If nothing's showing up after 24 hours, try restarting your phone. If this doesn't help, get in touch with our Optus Xtra care team at optusxtra@optus.com.au. Please include your full name, email address and registered phone number so we can quickly help with your enquiry.

When will I earn my extra data or credit?

You'll get either 1GB or $2 MyCredit added to your Prepaid account 28 days after downloading and signing up to Optus Xtra - as long as you haven't uninstalled the app during this cycle.

This means that if you're on the Prepaid Ultimate Plus, My Prepaid Ultimate, My Prepaid Ultra or My Prepaid Ultra Plus plans, you'll earn 1GB of extra data (this extra data doesn't rollover). If you're on the Prepaid Daily Maximiser, My Prepaid Daily Plus or $2 Days 4G Ready plans, you'll earn $2 of MyCredit (you'll receive an extra $2 of MyCredit for two days or for the remaining expiry of your current MyCredit balance, whichever is longer).

To earn extra data or credit through Optus Xtra your Prepaid account needs to be active. If you run out of data or credit on your Prepaid account, you need to recharge with $10 or more in the next 60 days to continue earning your Optus Xtra data or credit. After 60 days of inactivity on your account, you'll lose any Optus Xtra data or credit that you've earned.

If you already have 25GB or more of unused data on your Optus account, we won't be able to credit you with your 1GB of extra data for this 28 day cycle. Please make sure that you use up some of your unused data so we can credit you with your 1GB of extra data next cycle.

How much mobile data does Optus Xtra use?

You generally won't incur data charges for simply viewing ads on your lock screen without tapping on the ad. However, every now and then ads that you view on your phone lock screen without tapping on the ad, may use a small amount of data (less than 20MB per month).

If you tap to visit an ad's website or to watch a video, the data used will come out of your balance as normal. You will also use mobile data to download the Optus Xtra App (if you do so while connected to the Optus data network).

Data used by Optus Xtra will trigger a day to be charged as normal on My Prepaid Daily Plus and $2 Days 4G Ready Plans.

Will clicking on an ad trigger a day to be charged on Prepaid Daily Maximiser, My Prepaid Daily Plus or $2 Dollar Days 4G Ready plans?

Yes. If you're connected to the Optus data network and download the Optus Xtra app or if you tap to visit an ad's website or tap to watch a video, the data used will trigger a day to be charged as normal.

Do you have this for iPhone?

At this stage, Optus Xtra is not available for iPhone users.

Lock screen ads and content

How do the ads work?

The ads will automatically appear on your lock screen in place of your standard wallpaper. If you see an ad and want to know more, you can tap on the ad so to be taken through to a website or to play a video to find out more (usual data charges apply). If you're not interested, simply swipe right to access your security screen and unlock your phone as you normally would.

Will ads be on my lock screen every time I want to unlock my phone?

Ads will be shown on your phone lock screen most of the time but sometimes, depending on your interests, we might not always have ads to show you. If that's the case, you'll see wallpapers, quotes or your own photo that you've uploaded instead, depending on the choices you made when setting up the Optus Xtra app. You can change these settings any time in the Optus Xtra app in Lock Screen settings.

Do all the ads display the same?

You'll get two types of ads on your lock screen - Premium or Pop-up ads.
Premium ads fill the entire screen. Pop-Up ads take up a smaller portion of the screen and aren't shown for a set time. However, all ads allow you to tap to visit an ad's website or to swipe right to unlock your phone, and some ads allow you to watch a video (normal data charges apply).

Earning data or credit

How often will I earn extra data or credit?

Depending on the plan you're on, you'll earn an extra 1GB of data or $2 of MyCredit every 28 days.

How do I check how much extra data or credit that I have?

You can check your Prepaid balance, expiry and data usage via My Optus app, or you can SMS 'menu' to 9999.

If I uninstall Optus Xtra, will I still earn extra data or credit?

No. The app needs to be installed and active on your device. If you uninstall the app, the 28 day countdown will pause. If you download the app again within the next 60 days, you will be able to pick up where you left off.

When does my Optus Xtra data or credit expire?

The 1GB of extra data you earn lasts 28 days from the time that it is applied to your Prepaid balance. The $2 of extra MyCredit you earn lasts for either two days or for the remaining expiry of your current MyCredit balance, whichever is longer.

Do I have to be connected to the internet for my Optus Xtra lock screen to be active?

Yes. You either need to be connected to WiFi or the Optus data network to view current content and ads, as well as your updated countdown screen.

Will I get even more extra data or credit if I visit the ad websites?

No - your reward is based on how many days the app is active, not the number of ads you view.

Account and app

What happens if I swap my SIM, does the app still work?

Yes. It's linked to your phone number and not the SIM card, so the ads will keep displaying and you'll keep earning extra data or credit if you're eligible for these rewards.

What happens if I'm using the app and I want to change my number?

As the app is linked to your phone number we'll need to link your registration again. To do this, simply email the team at optusxtra@optus.com.au and they'll organise it for you. Please include your full name, email address and registered phone number so we can quickly help with your enquiry.

What happens if I change plans halfway through the countdown?

If you change to a plan with a different reward, your countdown as shown on the Optus Xtra app will stay the same, but your reward will change. For example, if you're 14 days into the countdown and decide to change from the My Prepaid Ultimate plan to the My Prepaid Daily Plus plan, you'll still have 14 days left, but you'll be counting down to an extra $2 of MyCredit instead.

If you change to a plan that isn't eligible for Optus Xtra because it's not Prepaid Ultimate Plus, Prepaid Daily Maximiser, My Prepaid Ultimate, My Prepaid Ultra, My Prepaid Ultra Plus, My Prepaid Daily Plus or $2 Days 4G Ready, we'll hold your extra data or credit for up to 60 days until you're back on one of these plans. However, If you don't go back onto an eligible plan within 60 days, you'll lose the Optus Xtra data or credit you've earned.

How do I deactivate my Optus Xtra account?

To deactivate your account, just uninstall Optus Xtra from your device.

Can I create multiple Optus Xtra accounts to earn more rewards?

You can't create multiple accounts on the one phone to earn more data or credit because this goes against Optus Xtra's Terms of Use, so we have the right to close your account if that was to happen.

Offer subject to change at any time. Data Plans and Daily Plans are eligible for 1GB data and $2 extra MyCredit respectively. Data does not rollover and subject to 25GB cap. $2 MyCredit has 2 day concurrent expiry with your existing recharge. Data or credit applied every 28 days after activation of the app, provided you have a valid recharge, existing data or credit. If you uninstall the app or change to an ineligible plan you forfeit the offer. Data charges apply for this service (approx 20MB per month, excluding viewing). Use of this app will trigger day's usage on Daily Plans.
