Prepaid International Roaming

Roaming does not need to be activated in order to purchase a roaming add on, however it is required in order to connect to international partner networks and utilise the add on inclusions when you are in a Zone 1 country. Please ensure that international roaming is enabled before purchasing a roaming add on.

International roaming is turned on by default for Optus Prepaid services. If you would like to check whether roaming is enabled on your service, this can be done via:

• The My Optus App
• My Account
• Calling us at 133 937, or +61 2 8082 5678 (free call from any other roaming activated Optus mobile service).

To access roaming on all Prepaid plans (excluding Optus Prepaid Daily), you’ll need to purchase an add-on at an additional cost. On Optus Flex Plus Traveller, International Roaming Add-ons can be purchased without an active recharge. For all other plans, you’ll need an active recharge at the time of purchase.

On Optus Prepaid Daily, roaming add-ons are not available and roaming charges will be deducted from any available Credit balance. To avoid surprises, check the roaming rates at optus.com.au/prepaidtravel before you plan to travel.

We recommend downloading the My Optus App prior to travel, as this allows you to easily select any further add ons while on the go. It is also recommended to save at least one card to your account prior to leaving Australia for ease of use while travelling. Roaming add ons can be purchased via:

• optus.com.au/recharge 
• The My Optus app
• 9999 SMS (with saved card or PayID)

Note that data charges may apply for the My Optus App and optus.com.au while roaming. You may need to connect to WiFi to access these if you don’t already have access to roaming data.

You’ll be able to use 9999 SMS without access to roaming data, provided roaming is enabled on your Prepaid service and it has connected to an international partner network.

There are a number of ways to check your balance while roaming. These include:

• The My Optus app
• Optus My Account
• 9999 SMS (Send the word 'BAL')

Note that data charges may apply for the My Optus App and optus.com.au while roaming.

If you have a modern handset that supports a variety of commonly used 4G/LTE network bands, it is likely to work on most international partner networks. You can confirm what bands your device supports by referring to the specifications provided by the device manufacturer. Keep in mind that the international partner network that we use may change from time to time, so if there is more than one network in the country you plan to travel to, you’ll need to consider whether your device is compatible with all networks.

If you are unsure, we recommend waiting until you have arrived in the destination you are travelling to. If your device is compatible with the international partner network, and configured correctly, connectivity will be confirmed by the receipt of a welcome SMS.
