VoLTE Roaming (Voice over LTE) is a network enhancement that allows customers to make VoLTE calls when overseas (voice is carried over IP Network instead of circuit switched network). VoLTE roaming will provide customers the same features which are currently available when using Volte domestically within Australia.

VoLTE roaming is available for prepaid, post-paid and business customers with compatible devices and software.

Customers enjoy superior quality, crystal clear high-definition voice calls while they are roaming. When using VoLTE roaming, voice calls are carried over the IP network, giving the same clarity that is enjoyed in your local Australian calls.

Customers can use data on the 5G network (if your phone is 5G capable), access your apps, voicemail, audio call conferencing (up to 7 participants), video conferencing (up to 3 participants) and call forwarding. Switching between voice and video will be just a tap away. VoLTE uses the 4G network for your whole call, meaning the speed of your connection never drops, and your call will connect within a second without any background noise, wind or crackling. Before, your device would automatically switch down to the 2G or 3G network to make a voice call. Now, not having to switch means your battery life will last longer and you’ll still be able to use data while in the middle of a call.

VoLTE roaming extends all the same benefits of VoLTE domestic to roaming customers abroad resulting in the same user experience as at home. VoLTE roaming also unlocks 2 additional benefits to customers:

First – it enables the same user experience as when non-roaming
Second – Voicemail is more reliable as there is no need to interwork with VPMN (Visited Public Mobile Network) and call forwarding is activated as it would when the subscriber is at home.

These enhancements include a faster call connection (compared to 3G), sharp and clear HD voice calls, as well as the ability to call and browse at the same time over a 4G or 5G connection.

Once it's activated, iPhone customers will continue to see the 4G icon display on their handset. If the customer sees 3G on their phone they are not using VoLTE roaming to make the call.

Compatible Android handset customers will see VoLTE next to the 4G icon in the phone screen, when in a VoLTE coverage area.

VoLTE roaming will automatically be provisioned on new services. To access it while overseas, you’ll need an Optus roaming service, roaming inclusion in your plan, roaming add-on or a roam pass. Find the best roaming option for you (link back to new main home page).

    a. Turn Data Roaming ON
    b. Turn Network Voice & Data to 5G Auto

For Samsung Phones
4. Go to Settings
5. Go to Connection
6. Go to Mobile Networks
    a. Turn Data Roaming on
    b. Turn Network Voice & Data to 5G Auto

Turn your phone off and then on again. Try changing your location. If still not working message us via My Optus app for further trouble shooting steps.

Check you have the right software version downloaded. Power off and then on again. Check you have data roaming turned on in your phone settings and check you have a Optus roaming service enabled. For further help message us in your My Optus App for further trouble shooting steps.

If a 3G network is available, the service will continue as a 3G HD voice service if moving out of a 4G/5G VoLTE coverage area. The call will not be disrupted in the handover.

The voice call will connect as a regular call. To feel the full VoLTE call experience that includes fast call setup + Simultaneous Data + HD Voice Quality, both parties should use a compatible VoLTE Roaming device and be in a VoLTE Roaming coverage area.

Soon VoLTE roaming will be available in VoLTE coverage areas of the US, with an international rollout planned.
