International Roaming Changes

As the world moves forward with mobile technology, older 2G and 3G networks are starting to be shut down to make way for the newer 5G network. This will impact how you use your Optus service while roaming overseas.

Here is what you need to know

One
When

Soon, the USA will begin making changes to their networks, with other carriers and countries following throughout 2022/2023. As these changes are made, the calls you make while roaming internationally will be done over the 4G Plus network using VoLTE (Voice over LTE) roaming. VoLTE is currently available on the domestic Optus 4G Plus network.

Two
How

To roam with VoLTE, your mobile device will need to be VoLTE compatible. This will be necessary across all paid roaming options to make and receive calls. Devices that can only access the 3G network won’t be able to make or receive voice calls while roaming.

Three
Who

VoLTE roaming is available for all Prepaid, Postpaid and Business customers with compatible devices and software.

Benefits of VoLTE Roaming

Faster call connection
  • VoLTE uses the 4G Plus network for the whole call, meaning the speed of your connection won’t drop, and your call will connect within a second without any background noise, wind or crackling.
  • Your voice calls will be carried over the IP network, giving you the same clarity of standard local calls.

Better battery life
  • As your device isn’t switching between the 2G or 3G network to make calls, you can expect your battery to last longer and will be able to use data while on the call.
  • VoLTE supports 5G LTE devices and allows 5G users to reap the benefits of 5G and make high quality voice calls without affecting internet speed or interruption
