What’s changing?
- Optus Home Fast speeds will increase from 100/18Mbps to 500/43Mbps*.
- Optus Home Superfast speeds will increase from 250/22Mbps to 680/43Mbps*.
- Optus Home Ultrafast upload speed will increase from 800/40Mbps to 800/80Mbps*.

Why is this important to Australians?
The way we use the internet is changing. With a growing number of connected devices in our homes and workplaces - from smart TVs and HD laptops, to video doorbells and robot vacuums - a fast, reliable internet connection is essential. Higher speeds mean smoother streaming, enhanced performance, and the freedom to use more devices at the same time.
Who will get faster speeds?
To access higher speeds, customers must have an eligible nbn plan, an eligible connection type and a compatible modem.
Eligible plan
You'll need to be on a plan with a Fast, Superfast, or Ultrafast speed (or equivalent speed pack), to enjoy even faster speeds. To check what plan you're on, select your nbn internet plan from the 'Services' tab in My Optus app.

Connection type
The technology you're connected with matters when it comes to high speed internet. You'll need to either have a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connection to access faster speeds.
Copper connections, including Fibre to the Node (FTTN) and Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), are not eligible for the speed increases. However, as nbn are rolling out FTTP across Australia, you may be eligible for the nbn $0 Fibre Upgrade program (standard install only). Modem compatibility
Your current modem/router, and how it is set up in your premises, could limit you from utilising the maximum speed of your internet plan.
- For the new Fast speed tier, we recommend a modem that supports Wi-Fi 5 or higher.
- For the new Superfast and Ultrafast speed tiers, a Wi-Fi 6 capable modem is recommended.

nbn technology types explained
Not sure what’s the difference between each tech type? Here’s a quick summary.
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
Relies on a fibre optic line run from the nearest available node directly to your premises. Learn more about nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).
nbn Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)
A fibre cable is run to a nearby node, then existing cable TV wires complete the connection to your home. Learn more about nbn Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC).
Fibre to the Node (FTTN)
A fibre cable is run to a node on your street and then copper wiring connects you the rest of the way. Learn more about nbn Fibre to the Node (FTTN).
Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)

Typical Busy Period Speeds: This is not based on the speeds observed for a representative sample (with the exception of the Ultrafast download speed which is not changing). Once more data is available, the Typical Busy Period Speeds for the new nbn speed tiers will be updated accordingly.
