nbn Cable (HFC) Explained
There are a number of different ways an nbn® connection can be installed. When a physical line is run from a premise, like with Fibre to the Basement, it’s called a fixed line connection.

nbn Cable (also known as HFC – Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) is how many Australians will connect to the National Broadband Network. nbn Cable is used where existing ‘pay TV’ or cable networks are suitable to bridge the gap between the nearest nbn fibre node and the premises.
An nbn Cable, or nbn HFC, connection starts with a fibre cable that runs to a node in your neighbourhood. Once at the node, nbn HFC uses the existing cables to make a connection to your home.
Who will connect via nbn cable?
nbn Cable is used in areas where existing cable TV wires can deliver nbn to your home. Once the nbn rollout in your area is complete, you’ll know whether HFC or another type of nbn connection, such as FTTN or FTTP, is available to you.
Do I need any equipment to connect to HFC?
HFC connections require an nbn access network device to be installed where the cable TV line enters your home. An nbn utility box will first need to be mounted on the outside wall of your home. Inside, an nbn connection box will be installed which needs to be connected to a coaxial wall outlet (the same used for cable TV) and a power outlet. If you also have cable TV, you may need a splitter to connect both at once.
If you decide to connect with Optus nbn, you can make an appointment to have a technician visit your home and install the necessary equipment inside and outside your home. The technician should then activate your service connection before they leave. In some scenarios you may be able to install both the nbn and Optus equipment yourself without a technician.
With Optus nbn, you will be provided with a Wi-Fi Modem, which is necessary to make use of your nbn connection box and to connect to the Internet.
