nbn Fibre to the Node (FTTN) Explained
There are various ways an nbn® connection can be installed. When a physical line is installed from a premises, it’s called a fixed line connection.

FTTN stands for Fibre to the Node and it's how many Australians will connect to the National Broadband Network. Fibre to the Node enables data services and broadband connections to run via a central network box, which is referred to as a node.
An nbn Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connection is usually used when the existing copper network gets used to link the last part of an nbn connection.
Who will connect fibre to the node?
FTTN will be installed in regions where there is already an existing copper internet set-up. If you are already connecting to the internet via ADSL, chances are you will get Fibre to the Node when you switch to Optus NBN.
Other connections such as Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) are mainly used where there is no existing copper-wiring nearby, for instance on new housing estates.
Do I need any equipment to connect to FTTN?
Fibre to the Node uses existing copper-wiring, so you will use the same phone line that you may already be using for your ADSL connection.
You won’t be able to choose a FTTN connection it just depends on internet infrastructure in your area. If you decide to connect to Optus NBN and an appointment is made, an nbn technician will install equipment inside and outside of your home. A Premises Connection Device (PCD) will be mounted on an outside wall. This is where the cable is connected from the street to your home. A wall inside your home will be fitted with the nbn fibre wall outlet and the nbn connection box. Your internet and home phone internet connection will come through this box.
The nbn technician should activate your service connection before they leave.
