We’re Changing Our nbn® Pricing. Here is Why.

If your family is anything like mine, then your home internet is an essential part of everyday life – the thing the whole family relies on for homework, streaming TV, working from home, gaming and more. It’s the same for businesses, too. Connectivity is the fuel for our digital economy that is central to Australia’s competitiveness in an increasingly digital world.
Over the past few years, the world of digital connectivity and internet usage has changed significantly. The global shift towards digitalistion, remote work, online education and entertainment has placed unprecedented demands on networks with a huge growth in usage.
Last year, the nbn together with the ACCC reviewed how the nbn service should operate for the next few years. This review included a specific focus on quality standards and the wholesale access costs that nbn charge Optus, as well as other internet service providers, to access its network. The nbn ultimately determines what it charges us and this has a major bearing on the prices we charge our customers. Unfortunately, this agreement gives nbn the right to increase wholesale access charges annually each year, and they have announced that they will do so in July.
As such, Optus will be reluctantly increasing pricing for many of our nbn plans from early July, 2024, by $4-6 and we will communicate any changes directly to customers from this week. We are very conscious that these increases may not be well received by Australian consumers and businesses in the current economic climate, however the imposed increase in our nbn costs as well as the increased costs of running our business (such as electricity and property costs), means we are also reviewing our pricing.
Despite these necessary changes, Optus remains committed to offering our customers great value internet with a variety of pricing options for home connectivity to suit a range of budgets and needs. Customers will continue to have high quality service and support, unlimited data, access to unique features such as Internet Turbocharge allowing eligible customers to increase the speed of their nbn connection when needed, and SubHub our subscription management service makes managing your subscription easy.
If customers are looking for a value driven alternative, Optus recently launched its new 5G modem, the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Modem. If households are in a 5G Home coverage area, the technology provides flexibility while maintaining performance at an affordable price.
We understand these changes come at a time when many customers are already feeling the crunch of rising costs, and we are doing what we can to keep our own costs and prices down for our customers. Optus will continue to partner with nbn and advocate for fair and sustainable prices and better service experience for our customers.
Our customer service team is available to assist in identifying the best plans and addressing any questions or concerns our customers may have.
