How partnership powers resilience: Behind IAG’s digital transformation

Posted by Optus Enterprise, 26 March 2026

When natural disasters strike in Australia, the difference between chaos and recovery often comes down to connection. And connection doesn’t just mean technology – it means people, collaboration, and the kind of longstanding partnerships built for moments that matter.

For almost 25 years, Optus and IAG have built exactly that: a strategic partnership grounded in trust, shared vision, and consistent delivery. What began as a telecommunications relationship has evolved into a deeply collaborative, multi-layered partnership that supports IAG’s transformation across Australia and New Zealand.

Recently, The Sydney Morning Herald showcased how IAG is reimagining its technology to serve customers faster, safer and more seamlessly. It’s an inspiring read – and a glimpse into what’s possible when Australian businesses rethink resilience not as a project, but as an ongoing responsibility. Read the full story here and watch it in action below featuring Neil Morgan, CIO, and Scott Lindsay, Executive Manager Property Claims Fulfilment, IAG.

IAG x Optus Customer Story – video produced in paid partnership with Nine

Talent 1: Neil Morgan, COO, IAG

Our vision to make more and more Australians and New Zealanders safer, and so delivering on that purpose has been a constant, but the technology that we use to do that has changed dramatically.

Optus is a good example of that, as we've gone through the journey, where we actually really commit to outcomes together.

We're in it for the benefit of our colleagues and our customers, and that's something that we hold on to very dearly.

We're trying to look 2,3, 4 years out of where we think our technology evolution ought to be, and what we think that can provide to customers and other stakeholders of the organization, infrastructure, telephony, core capabilities, storage networks.

These are the things where we rely heavily on partners, but they're also the things that allow us to then go and innovate and progress with emerging technologies.

AI's had a really important role to play in our organisation for many years, but what we've seen in recent years with the advent of generative AI, with the large language models, and the ability to access those through natural language and then being multimedia, is that it's really become something that we expect to see democratized across the right whole organisation.

We're deploying these capabilities to help our people provide speed and accuracy to our customers. That's the promise that we provide as an organisation, is to support people when they're in their moment of need.

We're trying to get as close as we can to that scenario where, from a customer's perspective, they're back in a state where they never really had the loss in the first place.

Talent 2: Scott Lindsay, Executive Manager Property Claims Fulfilment, IAG.

At IAG, when we respond to events, we pride ourselves on being the first to arrive and the last to leave.

So being the first to arrive, generally, we're turning up in a disaster zone where the services on the ground and power outages are quite real for us in South East Queensland.

We knew that the power outages had caused problems with the mobile phone data services.

We were able to contact Optus, and within days, they supplied us with Starlink units and backup redundancy options and satellite phones so we could actually deploy them with our assessors, but also with their help response vehicles, and that helped us also service our customers.

      Talent1: Neil Morgan, COO, IAG

The big transformation journey we've been on is to simplify and consolidate the core of our business and then allow us to deliver different customer experiences through deploying new and emerging technology.

And that's where our relationship with Optus came to the fore. We've really used them to support us in providing a resilient core infrastructure that we could do all of that transformation work on top of and that's where we've seen value in our relationships, is long term, understanding vision, committing to the vision, and then making it happen.

Building a resilient core - together

Behind the scenes, Optus has been helping IAG strengthen the backbone of its operations for decades. Today, that partnership spans critical infrastructure across both Australia and New Zealand, supporting everything from hybrid workforces to disaster zone assessors who rely on secure, stable connectivity when traditional networks are damaged or impacted.

Whether it's rapid deployment of satellite connectivity during floods or the modernisation of the IAG network infrastructure, Optus operates not simply as a provider – but as an extension of the IAG team. Our teams collaborate closely with IAG’s Technology and Business groups, offering strategic input, market insight, and ongoing innovation to support IAG’s multiyear transformation.

This is not a transactional arrangement. It’s a partnership built around operational excellence, shared accountability, and joint problem solving in the moments that matter.

      Technology that feels human

The work doesn’t end with connectivity. It extends into how technology can feel more human – supporting IAG colleagues, customers, and communities.

From cloud transformation and AI enabled customer experience to mobility and the IAG network modernisation, Optus is helping IAG build the digital foundations of a more resilient future. The goal is simple: technology that empowers people.

Because when you remove friction, strengthen resilience, and give people the tools to act quickly and confidently, you don’t just improve operations – you help support community and people in need.

A shared vision for what comes next

Neither transformation nor resilience is ever truly “finished.” But after 25 years of partnership, one thing is constant: Optus and IAG share a commitment to shaping what comes next.

At Optus, we’re proud to support organisations who show up first and leave last – the essential businesses who power Australia’s backbone. IAG is a powerful example of what’s possible when technology, trust, and purpose move in lockstep. Learn more about how we support our customers here or request a callback below.
