Tech-savvy Seniors: How to Make The Prepaid eSIM Switch Easy

Prepaid eSIMs are a great option for seniors looking to cut down on complexity. Before eSIMs, setting up your phone service involved removing the SIM tray of your phone and inserting the small physical plastic SIM card, before making calls, sending texts and having network access. With eSIMs, meddling about with fiddly plastic is no longer required.

At Optus we offer eSIMs which reduces the physical meddling required with physical SIMs.

But we’re also understanding that seniors might be hesitant to jump on the eSIM train. After all, SIM cards have been used in mobile phones for decades and have evolved over time, becoming smaller in size while continuing to remain reliable. You might not see the need in changing how you’ve approached your phone plan in so many years, and we get that.

Let us make the pitch for eSIMs and we’ll let you decide for yourself.

How is eSIM different to standard SIM?

eSIM works like a normal SIM card, minus the physical card. Your calls and texts are no different and your day-to-day phone use won’t change either.

The big improvement, and the ultimate difference, comes during the setup process for your plan or when switching to a new phone. When you order an Optus Prepaid eSIM, or switch to an Optus Prepaid eSIM, you’ll be given all-digital instructions on how to activate your eSIM, without needing to pop out the physical SIM card slot of your phone.

If you’re moving to a new phone, you’ll also need to move over digitally as well, as there’ll be no physical SIM card to swap between your handsets. We’d recommend reading up on our guide to eSIM to get across how to do this.

Before you begin

Before you begin the eSIM process, make sure you have:

  1. A stable internet connection
  2. The compatible device you wish to activate your eSIM on. Check with your mobile device's manufacturer to determine if it's compatible with eSIM.
  3. The latest My Optus app version installed on your device
  4. Checked for a software update for your device (or the download may fail)

How do I activate a prepaid eSIM?

Our guide to eSIM page includes detailed instructions on how to activate an eSIM across Apple Carrier Activation, a QR code or via My Optus app, but we’ll include instructions for activation via My Optus app below. These instructions apply to both Android and iOS devices.

  1. Download and Login to My Optus App (Apple) (Android)
  2. Tap Account
  3. Tap SIM Management
  4. Tap Activate eSIM and follow the prompts

Once your eSIM is set up, you should be connected to the Optus network within minutes. However, actual connection times can vary.

If you’re just now ordering your prepaid eSIM plan, we’ll give you setup steps along the way within the My Optus app. You can also watch this YouTube video.

If you’re setting an eSIM service up for a friend or loved one, note that, for security reasons, the account holder must be present during the eSIM ordering process. The account holder also needs to be present to complete the set-up process.

I'm a senior, why should I consider a prepaid eSIM?

eSIMs offer a convenience element that lets you connect without the need for a physical SIM. With eSIM technology built into most new phones, you can activate your service in just a few steps.

On top of that convenience, pairing an eSIM with an Optus Prepaid plan gives you greater control over your data and spending.

Our Prepaid plans are structured to include add-ons, and we’d recommend giving those a look when tailoring your perfect plan. Having a low data month? Sign up for a plan with less data, then get more data in a month when you're travelling, if you so wish.

The combination of these things could mean less fiddling around with plastic SIM cards, while also having greater control and flexibility between recharges with an Optus Prepaid plan.
