Reduce environmental impact, one tap at a time

The global climate crisis is one of the biggest issues facing humanity today. Over the past two years, Australia has faced some of its most challenging times. From bushfires to floods and drought – the devastating impacts of climate change have been felt by all of us.

From our glorious unspoilt beaches to the raw rugged beauty of the outback, Australians have a real connection with our planet. With our deep love of nature and the outdoors, many of us seek to reduce our environmental footprint, with 78% of Australians concerned about climate change, and are increasingly making more eco-conscious decisions to affect positive change.

According to research undertaken by Optus, 80% of Australians believe that businesses have a responsibility to address climate change and environmental issues

At Optus, our vision is to be Australia’s most loved everyday brand, with lasting customer relationships. We strive to be a leading corporate citizen, and sustainability plays a big part in that.

We recognise our responsibility to drive positive change and empower our customers, our people and our community to act on issues that are important to them.

Optus has carefully considered what we can genuinely do, and what we can empower our customers to do, that we believe would authentically make a difference, which is why Optus is launching Optus Eco, a new leading innovation as part of our Optus Living Network.

Optus Eco empowers customers to learn about their environmental impact and make a difference by reducing, offsetting and amplifying through simple steps and features like Optus Carbon Offset, to support Australian carbon reduction projects.

We estimate that a typical Optus user generates 6.5kg of carbon emissions per month to stay connected. Based on available device sustainability reports, we estimate that over its lifespan a device generates an additional 10.8kg of carbon emissions to charge.

With all of this top of mind, Optus is now encouraging customers to help offset their mobile carbon emissions by subscribing to Optus Carbon Offset to help support Australian carbon reduction projects like Boonora Downs in NSW and Tallering Station in WA, which reduce carbon emissions and improve biodiversity.

Optus has proudly partnered with environmental project developer GreenCollar to source these projects and work with farmers, graziers, traditional owners and land managers to improve the environment and reduce carbon in the atmosphere.

Optus Eco will also remind customers to reduce their impact by connecting with an eSIM, switch to paperless billing and repurpose their device to reduce plastic, paper and e-waste. And in the coming months, once customers have ticked off everything off their Optus Eco checklist, Optus will provide an extra carbon-offset bonus.

Sustainability is integral to achieving our vision, because winning the trust that underpins lasting customer relationships requires meeting customer expectations about what matters most to them. At Optus, we believe it takes an ‘all of us’ approach when it comes to climate action and we want to do our part to preserve the environment, reduce our carbon emissions, and empower our customers to join us in creating a better and more resilient planet for future generations to enjoy… one tap at a time!

Optus Eco is available to all Optus customers with access to My Optus app.
