Need to know your weeds at speed? These are plant identification apps everyone’s talking about.
During the chaotic year that had been 2020, we all tried our hand at (or at least thought about) three things: making sourdough, pickling and starting a herb garden. And while many of us ruled out the baking and pickling (due to cooking incompetence), gardening appeared as a relatively easy (or so we thought) challenge to take on.
From the highs of planting your first sprig of basil to the lows of losing your first sprig of basil, gardening, requires patience, love and perseverance. But wouldn’t it be great if instead of waiting to see whether that weird weed growing next to your basil could kill it, you could know in an instant? A new set of apps for iOS and Android have got your gardening woes covered.

No need for a green thumb
There is, of course, an element of talent to gardening. Like those friends who manage to keep all of their plants alive during summer. Those so-called “green-thumbed” people. But natural “talent” is rare. Below we’ve found the best four apps to help you feign a “green thumb.”
1. PlantNet Plant Identification
The crème de la crème of plant identification apps. The app is available for both Android and iOS and enables users to identify a plant by just taking a picture. It’s that simple. 200,000 plants are discoverable on the app and it can identify a plant by its leaves, flowers, fruits or even bark.
2. LeafSnap
Again, this app is a point-and-snap app capable of identifying thousands of plant species. It’s very user friendly and its Artificial Intelligence (AI) plant recognition tech is very swish.
3. SmartPlant
This is like the holy grail of plant maintenance. Made for both pros and novices, SmartPlant can identify plants and pests from a photo, as well as generate a care calendar, so you don’t forget to water or feed your plants. But perhaps the best feature on the premium app is the ability to talk to actual garden experts. Pretty good, huh?
4. PictureThis
One of the most popular plant apps at the moment, PictureThis is ideal for all those wilderness junkies who like to forage and live off the land etc. According to PictureThis, it has 98% accuracy on over 10,000 plant species, you can feel assured that the plant you’re looking at is what they say it is.
