Take jacaranda pics like a pro

Australia’s most Instagrammable flower is blooming again, so whip out your camera phones.

Spring has officially sprung in Australia and that means one thing, jacarandas. Much like Japan’s beloved cherry blossom festival, where thousands of tourists flock to take pictures of the pink flowers, jacarandas in Australia have become the “it” thing to post on the gram and it’s not hard to see why.

Thousands of tiny purple flowers line the streets making the average Aussie suburb, an ethereal, Rivendell-Esque wonderland. And if the purple flowers weren’t enough to celebrate, the blooming of the jacaranda heralds the end of the winter cold and the start of those easy summer days (huzzah).

If you want to purple-up your social media head to the purpliest jacaranda-hotspot of them all, the unassuming Northern NSW town, Grafton. When the jacarandas are in full bloom you can drive/fly or train it to Grafton and get all your purply jacaranda snaps.

Can’t get to Grafton? Not a worry, Jacarandas are spotted throughout Australia. For Sydneysiders, the aptly named Lavender Bay has quite the show of jacarandas, as well as Erskineville, Mosman and Paddington, to name a few. Western Australians can head to Inglewood, Subiaco and Applecross for the purple blooms and Brisbane University has a solid forest of Jacarandas to picnic under.

Alright so, you’ve sussed out the location, you’ve got your special jacaranda outfit on and you’re almost ready to take that perfect spring pic for your gram, all that’s left is the perfect camera.

1.     Grid it up

When shooting on a phone make sure you’ve got your grid section up, so you can get your focal point all lined up and ready to go.

2.     Grey isn’t dull

Flowers, trees, pretty much anything that photosynthesises are more photogenic when it’s overcast. This is so you get nice even exposure on your photos.

3.     Invest in a tripod

Nobody likes that distracting selfie arm in your photo.

4.    Get your lighting right

Look out for some cool shadows and make sure the light is in the right place. When you’ve nailed these things, hey presto, you’ve got yourself a picture.
