Australian regional road trips: Sydney to Forster

COVID impacted us once again, limiting our ability to summer holiday across state lines. So, what did we do? Another good ol’ fashioned Aussie road trip. Here’s what we got up to over the Xmas break.

The holiday season has come and gone. Ham was had, sunburn was inevitable and cool summer jams were played by whatever body of water that was adjacent. And despite being confined to whichever state you happened to be in, all-in-all this Chrissy break wasn’t too shabby. 

Making the best of a bad situation, we packed out bikinis, budgie smugglers and SPF and trotted off up the coast for a bit of summer fun. A wee journey with a stop at Seal Rocks till we reached our destination, Forster. What we did not expect was consistent storms and rain that turned our little adventure into an indoor getaway.

Anyway, here’s some stuff we packed, some tunes we listened to and things we watched during our rainy summer beach escape. 

Leg 1: Sydney to Seal Rocks- 3 hours, 250km

Ah, the good ol’ road trip. What a fun way to spend four hours of primo summer vacay. With that in mind, it was important to make sure we were prepared for the journey ahead. Starting with the right phone, speaker, tablet and a rocking playlist, to get us all jazzed up for the trip. 

Right, because our car isn’t the flashiest automobile on the market a portable Bluetooth speaker was an absolute must (no one wants to sit in a car for four hours without some righteous tunes). For this, we enlisted the help of these babies, the UE WONDERBOOM 2 - Bermuda Blue and hooked them up to our state of the art iPhone 12 for some excellent Spotify tunes. 

As for the jams. A little curated Spotify Playlist (read about some of Spotify’s secret features) called “The Road Trip” was created before departure. The idea was to only have one song from every artist (we liked), for example, only one Beatles song, only one Pixies song etc. Variety is the spice of life, after all. 

Leg 2: Seal Rocks to Forster Beach- 42 mins, 45kms

After having a quick swim at the beautiful Seal Rocks, it was time to move on to greener pastures. Considering the second leg of our wee road trip was quite a bit shorter, we opted for some bops. We’re talking a bit of Wu-Tang, bit of Biggie, nothing but the hits.

As we said earlier, we arrived at Forster expecting sunshine and blue skies, but what we got were storms and rain. Luckily for us, we brought our very fresh new Galaxy Tab S7+ 5G, so we could stream all the shows we wanted (in between TikTok viewings, have you heard of ShantyTok? Super addictive). So, we drank red wine, ate some Wallis Lake Oysters and inhaled all of HBO’s Chernobyl and Netflix’s racy drama series Bridgeton. It was indeed a time. 

When the sun did make an appearance we hot-footed it down to beach, speakers, umbrellas and champagne in-hand, to make the most of the sunny weather. 

There and back again: Forster Beach to Sydney

It was of course too short of a holiday and we were bummed to be leaving, so the music on the way back had to be happy, positive vibes only (sans Walking on Sunshine-does anyone like that song?). A lot of Lilly Allen, a lot of Mark Ronson and far too much Missy Elliot.
