Pele: Birth of a Legend, 2016 (PG)

As the name implies, Pele: Birth of a Legend is a Netflix-exclusive biographical drama on the meteoric rise of professional soccer player Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known by his nickname Pele. Widely acknowledged as one of the best football players of all time, the film covers Pele’s humble beginnings as a poor child in the slums of Sao Paulo to his meteoric success winning the World Cup Championship title at only 17.

Full of heart and made to honour the late Pele’s legacy, the movie takes you through all aspects of Pele’s life, including his contributions to Brazil’s performance at the 1958 Olympics football tournament, the development of his Ginga-inspired football style, and his personal struggles with class and national identity. Also offering a wide-lens view into the professional football sport, Pele: Birth of a Legend is an inspiring biographical film worth watching.

This Is Football, 2019 (MA 15+)

Simply named This Is Football, the Amazon Prime documentary series covers all things football and contains exclusive sneak peeks into famous football moments in history. These include Iceland’s miracle qualification into the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the success of England’s blind football team, and the remarkable triumph of the Japanese women’s football team at the 2011 FIFA World Cup, only three months after an earthquake had killed 16,000 people in Japan.

A unique take on the history of professional football, the emotionally charged six-part series is a great watch for both football fanatics and casual watchers of the sport alike. Each episode is around an hour long and covers a specific theme or concept, such as underdog success, team growth from the slums, and even the career of Lionel Messi.

Bend It Like Beckham, 2002 (MA 15+)

A multigenerational classic, Bend It Like Beckham is a sports comedy film about two ambitious teen girls defying family pressures to pursue their greatest passion, professional football. Despite having first premiered in 2002, Bend It Like Beckham is still a popular feel-good movie with a heart-warming message that resonates with young girls today. The movie uses the difficulties and competitive aspects of soccer to highlight how working hard and believing in oneself can help you achieve your dreams.

Bend It Like Beckham follows the tight friendship of Jess and Jules as they both challenge their parent’s wishes to chase a career as professional footballers. Played by Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, the two girls give it their all, challenging expectations and even occasionally bending rules in their favour. As both girls’ careers begin to grow, their families have to make a decision – honouring traditions or helping Jess and Jules pursue a new future. Bend It Like Beckham is available on BINGE.

FIFA Uncovered, 2022 (MA 15+)

FIFA Uncovered is a show on Netflix covering political power struggles, the organisation’s colourful history, and what’s involved in hosting the World Cup.  The TV mini-series is a great watch if you’re curious about how the professional sport of football is run, past, present, and future.

The series features journalists interviewing well-known professionals in the space, such as Sepp Blatter, Guido Tognoni and Mel Brennan. The four-part series covers the events from 2018 in Russia to 2022 in Qatar and aims to give viewers a better understanding of FIFA organisation.

The English Game, 2020 (MA 15+)

Another soccer-themed series available on Netflix is The English Game, a British historical sports drama about the birth of modern football since the 19th century. A dramatised true story, The English Game tells the story of a working-class star and an upper-class footballer, as they work together to create the game of football that we know and love today.

The show stars Edward Holcroft and Kevin Guthrie as dual protagonists, Arthur and Fergus, and features a great story about unlikely friendships, class struggles, and great ambitions. The show is six episodes long and is a great short watch to binge right before a football tournament you’re hyped about.

Supa Strikas, 2008+ (PG)

A family-friendly show to watch with your kids, Supa Strikas is an animated series about the fictional world’s best football team – Supa Strikas – and their journey to lifting the Super League trophy. Following Shakes, a professional striker, the show teaches kids about the global origins of the sport and how both past and present players have helped shaped it. Who knows, you might even learn a thing or two watching the show.

Seven seasons long and available on Amazon Prime, Supa Strikas is a great, light-hearted show to keep on the TV as you prepare for the perfect football match night. Child-friendly and even educational, Supa Strikas represents all things exciting and fun about football, in a uniquely animated form.
