Back to Business

The new year is an interesting time for business owners. Many entrepreneurs take the opportunity to hit the reset button and after some well-deserved time off, come back full of new ideas and motivation for the 12 months ahead.

But unfortunately, after a very social (and expensive) festive season, lots of consumers find themselves with less change in their pockets meaning that the wheels of small business tend to turn a little slower than normal.

While this is not an ideal position to be in as a business owner, there is a silver lining. During periods where your day-to-day might be less hectic than usual, you have the unique opportunity to spend time working on your business instead of in your business. Instead of chasing your tail, you might like to think about spending a little more time doing the things that will really move the needle for you and your business in 2025.

I can’t tell you how many business owners I’ve met over the years who always tell me that they simply don’t have the time to make changes to the way their business operates – and I totally get it. It’s hard to get ahead when you’re constantly in the ring and battling it out. But in business, just like in boxing, you need to step back, redirect, and go again.

With increasing costs, high interest rates and unstable cash flow, it’s essential to focus one hundred per cent of your time and energy on those factors that are within your control. In other words, you need to prioritise carefully. Not only does prioritisation help you find the right balance but can be one of the key ingredients determining the success of your business this year.

It always shocks me how little thought and consideration entrepreneurs give to the tech within their business. And when I say tech, I mean the solutions and systems in place that allow you to operate. Everything from telecommunications to your internet connectivity.

With the right tech, you put yourself in a position to succeed and reliably service that level of success. The wrong tech? You’re setting yourself up for some serious setbacks and crises at some point down the road.

So, here’s a few things to consider heading into the new year…

Audit your tech stack

Review, optimise and update tech to maximise your business for the year ahead. Don’t just sit back while your customers are not walking through the door. Take some initiative and take stock of your current tech. Make note of where it can be improved and take action.

Refresh your space

No two businesses are the same and that means that you can’t be modelling your digital space off someone else’s business. Whether you’re on site or on the go, you need to make sure that you’re using the right technology for your business. There’s no point in waiting for the storm to come before making the change.

Assess your team structure

Which stage is your business currently at? Are you starting up, scaling up or maintaining? Have a think and give some serious consideration to your team and whether you need to think about future proofing with more services and collaboration tools.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received in business was to always be proactive, never reactive. Simple but powerful if acted upon.

As an entrepreneur, you can’t afford yourself the luxury of sitting back in these slower periods. And when it comes to your tech stack, it’s no longer something that can just be added to the ‘do later’ pile on your desk. Audit your current stack, refresh your space, and assess your team structure.

The new year is a great time to get ahead of your competitors who are probably going to be a little slow out of the gate. Make the necessary improvements to your business because if you don’t someone else will.
