OPTUS BUSINESS AND SOUTH WEST TAFE PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE WORKPLACE OF THE FUTURE

8 March 2017

Optus Business and South West TAFE have launched an initiative to equip the educational institution’s students with the digital skills needed for the workplace of the future.

As part of a $2.3 million revitalisation project, Optus Business and South West TAFE have created 15 intelligent tailored Smart Classrooms for almost 5,000 students across the Warrnambool, Hamilton and Portland campuses.

Each Smart Classroom has been fitted with audience response and video conferencing technology, including Cisco WebEx and Jabber, driving greater collaboration and improving access for remote students. Campus servers have also been moved onto the Cisco Meraki wireless network to provide a more dynamic off-campus experience for students more than 200 kilometers away.

John Paitaridis, Managing Director, Optus Business said, “In an age of disruption we’re seeing virtually every industry in Australia needing to train its workforce for the digital revolution. Today’s announcement shows how organisations are partnering to align the skills of the next generation with those demanded by forward-looking industries.

“Optus Business is proud to support South West TAFE’s strategic vision to bring TAFE into the digital era, better aligning with local industry needs and boosting their students’ employability. The project showcases the strength and breadth of Optus’ ICT solutions in bringing digital transformation to the education sector, as well as enterprise and government organisations.”

With employment opportunities in south-west Victoria being affected by automation, Brad Henderson, Director of Business Renewal, South West TAFE said, “By partnering with Optus Business we’re now able to gear our courses and teaching methods to the jobs of tomorrow and improve access through connected classrooms. Our new solution makes education more accessible for students and teachers without sacrificing the collaborative nature of a traditional classroom environment.

“In the future, we could see teachers meet students off-site for on-the-job training and host a quick catch-up tutorial via a mobile device. Technology will continue to transform in the years ahead, and the foundations we have laid with Optus Business means South West TAFE is primed to capitalise on the latest and most valuable capabilities,” Mr Henderson said.
