Driver Licence information
How do I know if my Driver Licence number or Driver Licence card number has been exposed?
Customers who need to replace their Driver Licence will receive advice from Optus. Optus can confirm that we have communicated with customers who have had:
1. Both their Driver Licence number and card number exposed in all states who use both reference numbers where applicable.
2. Only their Driver Licence number exposed in all states.
In addition, there are a group of customers whose licence information was incomplete (for example, too many or too few numbers were included).
If we did not have valid contact details for impacted customers, those customers will be contacted via post using the last mailing address we have on file, as soon as possible.
Please see state or territory government guidance below with requirements for replacing your licence. To help you identify the numbers this article makes reference to, please visit ID document number reference guide.
What steps should I take next in relation to my Driver Licence?
If Optus has advised you that only the licence number on your Driver Licence has been exposed:
Your State uses a Document Verification Service (DVS) which means you need both your Driver Licence number and card number to verify your identity using your licence. Your Driver Licence number alone cannot be used to confirm your identity with DVS, without the card number. As a result, you do not need to replace your Driver Licence.
If Optus has advised you that both Driver Licence number and card number have been exposed:
To help reduce the risk of identity theft or financial loss, you are strongly encouraged to apply for a replacement Driver Licence through the Service NSW website or in-person at a Service NSW centre.
A fee of $29 is payable to Service NSW. Optus will apply an automatic credit to your next bill or invoice, to cover this cost.
If Optus has advised you that ‘Incomplete information’ has been exposed:
The information that was exposed does not meet the format of a proper licence number (for example, too many or too few numbers were included). As a result, you do not need to replace your Driver Licence.

If Optus has advised you that only the licence number on your Driver Licence has been exposed:
WA Driver Licence cards contain two numbers – the licence number itself and a unique serial card number on the reverse of the Driver Licence card (called the card number). From 1 September 2022, both numbers are required if the person’s identity is to pass a Document Verification Service (DVS) check with banks and other businesses.
As a result, the WA government has advised you do not need to replace your Driver Licence.
For customers still concerned about their privacy, who have only had the licence number on their Driver Licence exposed, they can apply for a new card number through the WA Government (as a precaution). Visit the Western Australia Department of Transport and follow the instructions to replace your licence.
If Optus has advised you that both Driver Licence number and card number have been exposed:
You are strongly encouraged to apply for a replacement Driver Licence number. Visit the Western Australia Department of Transport and follow the instructions to replace your licence.
