How much data does an average Australian use on the nbn?

Australian households are using more data than ever before. According to NBN Co, over 12 months between June 2018 and June 2019, consumption of data on the nbn® has increased by almost 25%. In June 2019 alone, Australia used a staggering 1.35 billion GB of data, dominated by video streaming services.

According to these same insights, as of June 2019, the average Australian is now using about 258GB of data a month. That’s an 820% increase on the nbn compared with December 2012, and there’s no sign of the upward trend slowing down. Wednesdays and Sundays are the busiest days on the nbn, while January and April have the highest downloads by month.

Geographically, New South Wales used the largest amount of data of all states, though Queensland had the highest average usage at 274GB per month and Tasmania had the lowest average usage at 231GB per month. There’s also little difference between city and country: those living in cities averaged 274GB per month, while those living in regional areas used 246GB per month on average.

As more and more of our lives are digitised, it’s no surprise there’s an increasing demand for internet data. If you’re not currently with Optus, make sure you take a look at our unlimited data nbn plans, plus the great optional extras you can add on.
