Revolutionising cinematic experiences with SD-WAN: The HOYTS Story

For over a century, HOYTS has been synonymous with cinematic excellence in Australia. As the entertainment industry evolves, HOYTS has embraced cutting-edge technology to enhance its operations and customer experience.
A significant milestone in this journey has been the implementation of a Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) solution, delivered in partnership with Optus and Cisco.
This transformative project addressed HOYTS’ challenges with legacy network systems, ensuring seamless operations, improved security, and future-ready scalability.
HOYTS operates in a high-demand, digitally integrated environment where network reliability is critical. Their previous MPLS network architecture struggled to keep pace with the demands of modern cinema operations.
To keep pace with customer expectations and operational requirements, HOYTS needed a modern, robust network solution.
Through a collaborative effort, Optus and Cisco designed and implemented a comprehensive SD-WAN solution tailored to HOYTS’ needs. The deployment included:
- Dual links combining Optus and NBN fibre for enhanced resilience and performance.
- Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN technology to enable efficient traffic management and network segmentation.
- Integration with Cisco Umbrella at every cinema, providing cloud-based security to block threats such as malware and phishing, while enabling secure direct internet access to enhance cloud applications.
This powerful combination of technology and expertise provided HOYTS with a network that could support their growing operations while maintaining high levels of reliability and security.
The implementation of SD-WAN delivered transformative outcomes for HOYTS:
- Improved reliability and uptime: HOYTS now enjoys consistent connectivity across all cinema locations, ensuring uninterrupted operations.
- Enhanced operational efficiency: Centralised network management through Optus’ managed services allows the IT team to focus on strategic initiatives rather than troubleshooting issues.
- Scalable and secure infrastructure: The SD-WAN architecture supports HOYTS’ diverse network needs, including managing IoT devices and securing individual sites.
The Optus partnership with Cisco was key to achieving these results. The Optus design and professional services expertise, coupled with Cisco’s advanced SD-WAN technology delivered the required seamless, high-performance network for HOYTS. Together with Optus, they provided a solution that not only addressed current challenges but also prepared HOYTS for the future.
This SD-WAN implementation has enabled HOYTS to elevate the cinematic experience for millions of Australians. From online ticketing to interactive digital screens across its Val Morgan operations, the network now supports a seamless and innovative customer journey.
“There isn’t really a part of our business that isn’t dependent upon Optus services,” said Adam Wrightson, Group IT Director of the HOYTS Group. “With Cisco’s technology and Optus’ adaptability, we’re positioned to grow and innovate continuously.”
As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, HOYTS, in partnership with Optus and Cisco, is ready to lead the way, delivering cutting-edge solutions and unforgettable cinematic experiences.
