On the move together for a cancer cure

31 March 2023

Group of people involved in the Tour de Cure fundraiser

Since 2007, the Tour de Cure has become one of the biggest cancer fundraisers in Australia. And for those involved, it's often deeply personal, says Matt Formston, Sustainability & Sponsorship Executive & Chair Optus Disability Network at Optus Enterprise and Business.

From my own experience of living with a disability, I know how important it is to be surrounded by people who have your back – partners who share the same vision and values.

This is just one of the reasons why Optus has partnered with Westpac since 2017 to sponsor Ride for a Cure and support ground-breaking initiatives in cancer research, support and prevention.

It’s also true that most of us have been touched by cancer in some way, whether personally, or via friends or family members. So when the call goes out each year for the annual fundraising event, there are a lot of very motivated people out there who are keen to get fit and connect with others – all to raise money for a good cause.

Of course, not everyone is up for riding 380 kilometres over the course of several days, which is why the long-established Westpac Ride for a Cure was expanded last year to include the 21-km or 10-km Westpac Walk for a Cure – known together as Move for a Cure.

I’m passionate about diversity and inclusion, so it was particularly wonderful to see so many people from different cultures and with different disabilities being safely included on the day. Check out the Optus Walk team in action.

It’s also great that Optus as an employer is so supportive of people’s desire to get involved and give back to the community. All Optus staff are able to take up to five volunteering days each year – which helps encourage even more walkers, riders and support crew to participate in the event.
