From Data to Decisions: Enabling Utilities for the Future

In an era where the energy landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation, energy and utility companies are seeking innovation and advanced technology to redefine their operational paradigms.
This transformation has been evolving for more than a decade, but as with any industry that manages the balance of legacy systems and infrastructure, the process of modernisation is complex. Innovative digital technologies such as machine learning, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence are at the forefront of this evolution, leveraging data and connectivity to bring technological breakthroughs to all sectors of the energy supply chain.
As McKinsey has outlined, most major utilities in North America are using digital, data and analytics in some fashion. Still, a cohesive strategy on a comprehensive digital, data and analytics platform has yet to fully materialise.
When it comes to leveraging the power, speed and reliability of 5G connectivity, not all customers are aware of the full extent of the benefits for their organisation. Large-scale implementation of 5G technologies, based on a cohesive strategy across a timeline of three to five years, is exactly what the industry needs to break free of its current slow and linear improvement. The time for exponential growth is now.
Digital disruption has been rewriting the rules of business across various industries. Disruption has blurred the physical and digital lines and now poses questions about edge computing versus cloud capabilities. Now more than ever, we see the impact of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and generative artificial intelligence. However, the utility sector has yet to fully embrace digital transformation.
Creating a digital-native-style, secure, and interoperable platform for scaling business services across utilities requires a detailed, layer-based framework and associated design elements. As McKinsey asserts, the interplay between various user experiences, and analytics across both core data points and the Internet of Things could better prepare businesses to embrace the myriad advantages of 5G connectivity well before their competitors.
Design and ideation are readily accessible, but the realities of implementation are where the sector is experiencing hurdles. However, as more companies step up to the plate, initiate proof of concepts, and then deploy them at scale, the industry as a whole can begin to fully realise the benefits of digitisation.

Optus stands as a catalyst for change in a landscape defined by evolving utility dynamics. Collaborating with Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC), we’re stepping up to our role in reshaping the industry, employing innovative solutions to address pressing challenges.
Optus and TRC's partnership pioneered an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution. Over a staged four-year deployment, 68,000 smart water meters will empower residents to monitor real-time water usage. The AMI system's early leak detection capabilities promise cost savings for consumers and greater operational efficiency for TRC with the enhanced ability to leverage preventative maintenance. The downstream advantages of initiatives like this are exponential.
To drive real and sustainable change, partnerships and the sharing of expertise is critical. The Optus-TRC partnership exemplifies the transition towards becoming a smart council, replete with cost savings and environmental benefits. This is not merely a technological endeavour; it's a commitment to a sustainable future—a future where data, innovation, and connectivity converge to redefine the sector.
Optus overcomes challenges unique to Queensland's water infrastructure management with our consortium—the result is a seamless, end-to-end solution that empowers consumers and streamlines utilities' efficiency. As the energy and utility sectors navigate transformation, we see our role as a guiding force, enabling partner, and support in leading the sectors toward a digitised and sustainable future.

Another example of enabling our customers to implement trials to move toward proof of concept is the deployment of Project Endeavour. In collaboration with Endeavour Energy, AWS, and Unleash Live, we’ve harnessed 5G technology to revolutionise electricity infrastructure inspections. The project, backed by a $648,000 grant from the Federal Government's 5G Innovation Initiative, deploys drones equipped with ultra-high definition (UHD) cameras, AI, and cloud capabilities to assess powerline damage swiftly.
The innovative solution employs real-time streaming to relay footage to control centres, enabling rapid deployment of repair crews and reducing outage durations. Beyond disaster recovery, drones enhance routine network maintenance by identifying faults and damage, bolstering worker safety.
Endeavour Energy, responsible for powering over 2.6 million people across NSW, anticipates significant efficiency gains. The successful trial marks a pivotal step in leveraging 5G's ultra-low latency to transform energy infrastructure management, reinforcing Australia's commitment to digital innovation in the energy sector.
The energy and utility sectors are at a crossroads, and Optus is ready to step into our role in helping our customers evolve towards a digitised future. As the world continues to adopt a new era of connectivity, our initiatives can help drive the industry's evolution. Through our integrative collaborations and technological expertise, we can help prove that a brighter, more efficient utility landscape is not just a possibility—it's a reality waiting to be realised.
