A decade of impact with Tour de Cure

12 November 2024

Group of people involved in the Tour de Cure fundraiser

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Tour de Cure' and CommBank’s inspiring Can4Cancer initiative—a dedicated effort to raise funds and awareness for cancer research, prevention and support across Australia. Optus is proud to have partnered with CommBank and Tour de Cure as a sponsor of Can4Cancer since its commencement. This enduring and ongoing commitment has brought together communities, allowing us to unite in the fight against cancer.

Partnering to fuel hope and drive progress

Tour de Cure has become a powerful force in Australia’s battle against cancer, focusing its efforts on funding innovative research, essential support programs and prevention initiatives. To date, the Can4Cancer campaign has supported 145 cancer projects, has raised over $19.2 million working towards a target of $20 million and have had 33 cancer research breakthroughs, offering renewed hope for a cancer-free future. Tour de Cure’s unwavering focus has touched countless lives, inspiring and supporting individuals and families impacted by cancer.

Every day, people are touched by cancer, whether directly or through loved ones facing their own battles. The impact of a cancer diagnosis is wide, whether directly or through the hardships that the community around the patient must face. This partnership has aligned our team at Optus, rallying colleagues and the community together in support of those affected by cancer. Can4Cancer represents more than just fundraising; it embodies a shared vision of compassion and resilience, showing how collective action can lead to meaningful change.

"Hearing people’s stories of losing their mother or losing a child, they're stories that no one should have to go through. Optus is proud to be in partnership with Commonwealth Bank and Tour De Cure in finding funds and finding ways to fight this awful disease."
Matt Formston, Optus Sustainability & Sponsorship Executive

340 hearts committed to a cure

In the past decade, Optus and its employees have proudly contributed $762,000 to Can4Cancer, with $620,000 from corporate sponsorship and an additional $142,000 raised by individuals from the Optus team. This funding has directly supported cancer research projects, advancing prevention and treatment efforts that make a tangible difference in lives affected by cancer.

To date, 340 Optus employees have participated in Can4Cancer events, striding together with hope and determination. At the 2024 Sydney walk event, there were over 5,400 walkers from CBA and its partners, and the event itself raised close to a staggering $1 million.

“Optus has been a supporter of Tour de Cure for well over a decade. Now, as we reflect on the success and achievements of Can4Cancer, it is apt to recognise the contributions of Optus and its people, including over the ten years of this important program. Together Optus, Can4Cancer and Tour de Cure have not only raised money to fund research but have also impacted thousands of people in our unifying mission to cure cancer and change lives. Over our time working together, significant steps have been taken in making cancer a survivable disease through ground-breaking research. We know that over 1 in 3 cancers can be prevented through lifestyle choices; meaning the achievements of Optus and Can4Cancer are also found in fuelling a movement that empowers people to live happy, healthy, and fit lives.”
David Mann, CEO, Tour de Cure

As we celebrate this 10-year milestone, we reflect on the long-lasting impact this partnership has had on the community. Together with Tour de Cure, we are saying "yes" to hope, change, positive connections and a future where fewer lives are impacted by cancer.

Looking forward, our commitment to this partnership will continue to grow as we unite to walk, ride, and fundraise—determined to make a difference, one kilometre, one dollar, and one cure at a time.
